Atmospheric, period townhouse apartment in picturesque Dartmouth on the Devon coast

There are few seaside towns as atmospheric as Dartmouth, tucked up the River Dart just off the south Devon coast. It's a place of great maritime character, with multi-coloured houses tumbling down to a picturesque harbour. And if you're looking for a holiday home that's in keeping with the scene, then Kipper Lodge will do the trick for families and friends after a town-based seaside escape.

Taking up the top two floors of a typical period townhouse, this apartment is all about the town and distant hillside views, from big bay windows, attic bedrooms and outdoor terrace alike. The decor and furnishings are a contemporary spin on a 19th-century interior – you can imagine an old sea captain once living here, though he'd doubtless have something to say about the high-spec wood-burner, leather sofas and superbly equipped kitchen. Two of the four bedrooms (a double and a twin) are on the entrance level, together with the open-plan kitchen and living area, a bathroom with a walk-in shower and separate washroom. Upstairs there's the master bedroom, another single and another bathroom. Wherever you are, there are views to enjoy, though best spot of all is the sun-trap terrace, to which there's direct access through large, folding doors from the kitchen-diner, bringing the outside in as part of your stay.

If there are drawbacks, they are only to do with Dartmouth's historic character – like the narrow road to the house, and the fact that there's off-road parking for just one car. But that character is also what you've come for, and Kipper Lodge is wonderfully placed, just five minutes' walk from the harbour. The nearest beach – the piratically named Sugary Cove – is a fifteen-minute walk away, right next to Dartmouth Castle, or it's only three or four miles' drive to the amazing sweeps of Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands. Everything else – the ferry across the River Dart, watersports outlets, old pubs, shops, farmers' markets, galleries, cafes and restaurants – is walkable, and at the end of the day you have that wonderful terrace to come back to. You really are at the heart of one of England's most attractive coastal destinations.

Available all year.
