Incredibly comfortable beds and extremely tasty breakfasts are just two of the things that make Sheriff Lodge a fantastic place to stay, in the old spa town of Matlock, on the edge of the Peak District National Park. But both the beds and the breakfasts are merely indicators of what's truly special about this adults-only Matlock B&B, something that can be summed up in just three words – attention to detail, which owner Ziz has applied to every aspect of this place since she bought it. The reason the beds are so comfy? The mattresses are a minimum of eight inches deep, seven-foot long and made up with Egyptian cotton bed linen, and beds are all super-kings (some convertible to twins). The reason the breakfast is so tasty is because it’s fresh from the farms around you – as much as possible is locally sourced.

There are also fresh flowers, up-to-date magazines and a little box of ‘things you may have forgotten’ in all five en-suite bedrooms, and guests are offered tea and cake on arrival. Each room is individually decorated, mostly in elegant neutrals with a touch of colour and sheen here and there, to suit the age and elegance of the place. Originally built in 1740, this gritstone-built detached property was extended in 1908, and in some ways, retains the feel of the Edwardian gentleman’s residence it once was. The long curtains, upholstered comfy chairs, a drawing room where you can take a nightcap, and someone to serve your breakfast all help with that. But elegant as it is, this place is also homely. There's a garden for guests' use, plenty of parking and even a couple of EV charging points in a separate area. Ziz also offers thoughtful food-focused extras like sharing platters and packed lunches, plus homemade Afternoon Teas and truffles.

Each en-suite bedroom has tea- and coffee-making facilities, a Smart TV and even a hot water bottle. There are games, DVDs and books to borrow downstairs in the dining room, and one of the rooms – The Warren – has a separate entrance. Each room has its own personality, tied to the British countryside by both the paintings on the walls and the view outside the windows. That’s best seen from the top spots on the second floor, which offer panoramas of the Derwent Valley.

Whichever room you stay in, it doesn’t take long for you to be out in the Great Outdoors. You can walk down the hill in 10 minutes to pick up a picnic from the shops in the centre of Matlock town and then strike out into the surrounding countryside. Perhaps you’ll take the riverside walk to Chatsworth House or the more challenging route up High Tor. Further afield but still close by are some of the Peak District’s greatest attractions: Haddon Hall and Bakewell, both about 15 minutes’ drive away, and guests qualify for discounts at many nearby restaurants and attractions.

Amazing Afternoon Tea

You made our stay very welcoming. An amazing afternoon tea with excellent scones and a lovely veloute to start with. A good variety for breakfast, nicely cooked and well presented. The rooms are very spacious, comfortable and beautifully decorated and sumptuous bedding.

A great place to stay and will go back

An amazing find! Ziz is the perfect host and everything was perfect. The room was very comfortable, nice and warm with extra heating if necessary. There is everything in the room that one would need. The towels are large and fluffy the bedlinen crisp and white and we had such a good night's sleep. The decor throughout is lovely and all very well kept and lovely and clean. The breakfast choice was amazing and the food was all locally sourced, such a good breakfast Ziz! We stayed for a treat for my husband's birthday and for an extra treat we had the beautiful afternoon tea, all homemade by Ziz, beautiful choices on there! Ziz is the perfect host in a very elegant home, it was a pleasure to meet Sukura the beautiful boxer puppy and looking forward to see how she's grown when we visit again. Thank you Ziz and Sukura for a very pleasant stay.

Grand Lodge, central to local attractions

We chose Sheriff Lodge in Matlock so that we could tour the local attractions. The website impressed us and we were not disappointed when we arrived. Level, private and adequate parking was appreciated. The Lodge is so nice and a short downhill walk into town. If you enjoy a sumptuous breakfast, this place is for you. The 'Mousehole' bedroom on the 1st floor was lovely with quality bathroom products. The attractions of the area; Cromford Mills and village, Crich Tramway Village, Bakewell, Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are all easily reached. If you enjoy steam railway the Peak Valley terminates in Matlock.

Again at Sheriff Lodge

We have stayed with Ziz and her dog Red again at Sheriff Lodge. A wonderful place to stay for a break. Lovely rooms, great breakfast and Ziz is so attentive. The only place for us when we visit Matlock. Thank you once again Ziz.

Anniversary stay

Had an amazing 4 night getaway for our anniversary and we’re so glad we chose Sheriffs Lodge. Ziz was such a wonderful host, very friendly and so helpful in every way. We stayed in the nest, which has very tasteful decor, much to myself and my wife’s taste. Ziz kindly arranged flowers for my wife which she absolutely loved. Breakfast is fantastic and I’m now a total convert to eggs Benedict, delicious. Definitely be booking again in the near future. Thank you Ziz for a wonderful stay.

Our favourite B&B!

Another fabulous stay! I’ve lost count of how many times we’ve visited Sheriff Lodge. We keep returning because it’s simply the best B&B we’ve ever visited, and Ziz is a wonderful host! This time we tried Ziz’s Chatsworth platter and it was absolutely delicious! With home made bread and chutney too, it was everything we hoped for. Her breakfasts were also of the usual very high standard. Ziz sources high quality ingredients and cooks them to perfection. Her breakfasts are second to none! Ziz had also refurbished our favourite room for this stay. It certainly didn’t need refurbishing, but looked beautiful and was as comfortable as ever, and her usual thoughtful extra touches were greatly appreciated. We’ve already booked our next stay and highly recommend both Ziz and Sheriff Lodge!
