What are the best hiking routes to explore in Snowdonia?

The dramatic mountains of Snowdonia boast over 1700km of trails, and the Snowdon Horseshoe 11-kilometre walk is surely one of the best. Not for the faint-hearted, it has some narrow paths and long drops, but the views are stunning and the peaks worth the effort. Less adventurous is the Pyg track from Pen y Pass.

Where is the best base to stay in Snowdonia?

Dolgellau is a great base for walking in the national park. This lovely market town is within striking distance of Cader Idris. The various accommodation options of Graig Wen suit all-comers, and the walks in all directions are beautiful. Blaenau Ffestiniog is also a good base, where you can stay at Llechwedd Glamping, close to the famous slate caverns, or the brilliant boutique adventure hotel of Plas Weunydd. Consider also the village of Betws-y-Coed, sometimes touted as the ‘gateway to Snowdonia’, and home to the very comfortable Shorrocks Apartment, while YHA Pen-y-Pass is situated right at the base of Snowdon itself. What month is best for Snowdonia?

The only thing that makes a month best or worst in Snowdonia is the weather, so from that point of view July and August would be the warmest and driest, but also of course the busiest. The coastal beaches are at their best at this time of year too, with destinations like the pretty Porthmadog and its unique Brynkir Tower offering comfortable boutique accommodation. Try also going more out of season, as May to early October are all magical times to visit. Dedicated walkers make the most of the national park all year round. The magical village of Portmeirion is perhaps the ultimate North Wales coastal place to stay.

Do you need a car in Snowdonia?

Travelling with a car is the most practical way of getting the most out of Snowdonia, but public transport is good, and cycling is a great alternative. Llanberis is well-served by train and a short bus ride away from walking trails. Greystones Chapel offers superb accommodation in a stunning location nearby.
