The Midlands
For many, the Midlands means cities, and in particular Birmingham, and we would be the first to say that these are often overlooked – England’s second city of Birmingham in particular, which has undergone a bit of renaissance in recent years. Nearby, Warwickshire and in particular historic Stratford-upon-Avon draw the tourists, and the counties further west – Worcestershire, Shropshire and Herefordshire – offer some of the most stunning and unspoilt scenery in the country. On the Midlands’ opposite flank, the Peak District of Derbyshire is perhaps the region’s busiest spot, and quite rightly – its landscape is magnificent and its tourist heritage second to none, meaning that there are also countless great places to stay. Consider also the delight of tiny Rutland and the open spaces of Lincolnshire, both of which are full of great hotels, gastropubs and B&Bs.
