Set in one of the highest spots in the Peak District, YHA Edale Activity Centre is a rambling former country house surrounded by countryside, with Mam Tor to the south and Kinder Scout Plateau to the west.
Spread across three buildings, the hostel sleeps up to 153 across a mix of private rooms and shared dorms, and has classrooms, cycle storage, and a drying room for muddy boots. Families, school groups and solo travellers are equally well catered for.
But the real draw here isn't just a place to lay your head, but the activity centre itself. With its own team of qualified instructors, YHA Edale runs off-site courses in climbing, caving and canoeing, while in the grounds, you can enjoy archery, high ropes and orienteering. Whether you're a first-timer wanting a taster or a seasoned adventurer after something more technical, there's something for you, and bespoke packages are available for larger groups, too.
Fuel yourself in the morning with breakfast, served daily, and come evening, there's a café-bar menu and a licensed bar, or you can make something in the self-catering kitchen and eat in the dining room. Beyond the hostel doors and organised activities, Hathersage's open-air pool offers heated and cold water experiences depending on the season; self-guided walks through the upper Edale Valley are popular, and Chatsworth House is reachable in 40 minutes by car.
