Church Street Ashford in the Water Bakewell Derbyshire DE45 1QB
This lovely 17th-century whitewashed pub sitting back off the road has been in Debbie Shaw's family for at least one generation, and you can feel the love. With chef/husband Carl she administers cheer, beer and great food in traditional surroundings; think flagged floors, beams, oak settles and ticking clocks. No laminated menu here – it's all fresh and changes regularly, with bread and even the cheese biscuits made in the kitchen. Choose from warm mackerel salad with sweet and sour onions, duck liver parfait, spicy three-bean casserole, baked halibut on potatoes with red onions and tomatoes, or fennel and smoked cheese tart. Debbie tried to take their celebrated Stockport Pie off the menu but faced a minor revolt so reinstated it. It's fine to just sit in the corner with the paper of course, a pint of well-kept Robinson's Unicorn as your companion. Your four-legged friends are welcome too, and since there are any numbers of fabulous walks in and around Ashford, it would be a shame to leave them at home.
