If you like the idea of waking up in the heart of Robin Hood country, YHA Sherwood Forest is a rather good place to start. Set at Forest Corner on the edge of Edwinstowe, the hostel is just a short walk from the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve, making it an excellent base for exploring one of England’s most legendary landscapes on foot or by bike.
The hostel has a lively, welcoming atmosphere and is exclusive-hire only, so there's lots of space for groups, school trips and family gatherings across the mostly en-suite bedrooms (up to 48 people). You'll also find a spacious dining room, kitchen, lounge and drying room, and the property is dog-welcoming as well. If you'd rather ot self-cater, meal plans are available, from bed and breakfast up to full-board.
But really, the location is the star of the show, with woodland walks and biking trails (National Cycle Route 6) starting practically on the doorstep. Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve covers around 450 acres and is home to some wonderfully ancient trees, including the legendary Major Oak, which is thought to be around 900 years old. The Visitor Centre is close by, offering an introduction to the history, wildlife and folklore of the area before you head out to explore. Back in Edwinstowe, you can delve further into the Robin Hood story: the village is traditionally associated with the heroic outlaw and Maid Marian. There’s plenty to do further afield, too. Mansfield and Worksop are both within easy reach, while Nottingham (50 minutes south) makes a good day trip.
Getting to the YHA is straightforward, too. Edwinstowe is served by the Sherwood Arrow bus, which runs between Nottingham, Worksop and the forest, with a stop directly opposite the hostel. Driving? There's free parking on site.
