There are good ideas – luxury glamping pods – and then there are great ideas: setting the pods on a wine estate, overlooking a vineyard. Hats off to Nottinghamshire's Wolds Wine Estate, which brings a touch of French or Australian glamping flair to the British countryside and gives it its own homegrown spin. This family-run, South Nottinghamshire vineyard gives visitors the chance to relax in comfortable surroundings while sampling an artisan English wine or two from local suppliers. They plan to have their own wines available for sale in a year or so, from vines planted on three acres of the estate, and grown without pesticides in the most organic way possible. And there’s more – four bee hives, grazing sheep and a gaggle of root-around pigs.
It's not just about the setting. The four pods are a cut above the usual standard – more like classy, spacious lodges, with private bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms, all double-glazed and heated with radiators. They take their names from the grape varieties on site. 'Pinot Noir' and 'Solaris' have a double bedroom and sofa-bed in the living area, so are great for cosy couples and small families; 'Rondo' and 'Chardonnay' sleep up to four people in two separate bedrooms. Huge arched windows throw light on to stylish alpine interiors, and everything inside is just so, from fully equipped kitchens to proper toilets, spacious showers and heated towel rails. Bed linen and towels are all supplied, so there really isn't anything you need to bring, and you're certainly not forgoing any creature comforts in order to spend a night or two among the grapes. Raised sundecks are for sipping sundowners and vineyard dinners, and each pod has a private barbecue area, with plenty of grassy space for the kids to play.
There's a wine shop and wine tastings available on the estate, and you can book things like vineyard yoga sessions or cocktail-making classes, so the set-up is great for small parties and groups. There are several country pubs within a couple of miles too, and plenty of walks and bike rides run straight off the Estate into the Nottinghamshire Wolds, where the villages of Owthorpe and Normanton-on-the-Wolds are especially diverting. - Perfect for families: Our luxury pods Pinot Noir and Solaris with a double bedroom also have a sofa-bed in the living area. These pods are therefore great for small families of 2 adults and 1 child. For those with a large family or want a bit more privacy our 4 person pods have 2 bedrooms with a double Master bedroom and a double or twin second bedroom. There is plenty of field space for kids to play in front of the pods so that they can enjoy being outdoors.
- Perfect for friends and groups: Our 4 person luxury glamping pods (Rondo and Chardonnay) with a double bedroom and twin/double room for families or groups who are eager to enjoy some outdoor living together. Planning something bigger? Get in touch to discuss your large group booking.
- Child under 4?: For a child under 4 who doesn’t need a bed we can provide a travel cot which will fit in the Master Bedroom for £15 (or you can bring your own for free). Keep in mind that our 2 person Pinot Noir and Solaris pods have an open corridor between the master bedroom and living area.
