Tucked away in the heart of the National Forest, this YHA is a great choice for getting back to nature without having to venture too far from civilisation. Set just outside the village of Moira in Derbyshire, the hostel sits beside Conkers Waterside and is an excellent base for walking, cycling and adventures in this green corner of the Midlands.
The exclusive-hire-only hostel has a relaxed, welcoming feel, making it ideal for families, groups and school trips (for up to 74 people). Built using sustainable timber and solar panels, and using biomass heating and rainwater harvesting, it's an affordable, eco-friendly option. Most of the rooms are dormitory-style with bunk beds. There are communal areas and extensive grounds, plus a modern kitchen, and meal plans are available if you prefer not to cook, ranging from B&B up to full-board.
The National Forest is criss-crossed with footpaths and biking routes, while Conkers is right on the doorstep, offering 120 acres to explore, an activity trail challenge, zip wires and climbing walls. Inside, enjoy a 4D cinema, play zone and over interactive exhibits. Despite its rural setting, YHA National Forest is surprisingly easy to get to – around 7.5 miles from Burton-upon-Trent station and just a short drive from the A42, making it a useful option for a weekend escape from Birmingham, Leicester or Nottingham. But once you've arrived, there's little need to get back in the car – the surrounding woods and attractions are made for discovering on foot or two wheels.
