Walcot Hall Glamping
Walcot Hall is a fabulous country estate, perfectly placed for exploring the beautiful Shropshire Hills, and a glorious place to stay in its own right, with a Georgian house at its heart, and, in addition to a number of comfy self-catering cottages and apartments, no fewer than ten different glamping hideouts spread around the 30-acre site, most of them situated in Walcot Hall's very own Arboretum and providing a true sense of woodland seclusion.
They have a wide range of options, – four yurts, a couple of gypsy caravans and romantic shepherd's huts, two 'showman's' caravans, even a converted fire truck. Some of these have their own facilities, the yurts share a converted henhouse loo, others use a 'long-drop' earth toilet in the woods; there is a gas-powered shower in a caravan. All are exquisitely fitted out in a rustic but luxury style with huge beds. Whether you chose the indulgence of the cottages or the excitement of glamping, guests are welcome to all the privileges of a night at Walcot Hall. The village pub – the Powis Arms – is owned and run by the Hall and serves good food (and also has camping pitches during the summer). In the grounds there are a couple of fishing lakes, a smaller lake with rowing boats to dabble around in and a nearby stables that can take you out for a hack on the local bridleways. Walkers are spoilt for choice but you might like to try the scenic three-mile route to Bishops Castle, a thoroughly welcoming little market town where there are shops, good pubs and a couple of great places to eat, including the restaurant at the excellent Castle Hotel. In the other direction, The Kangaroo Inn in Aston-on-Clun is a proper locals joint serving good food – one of our favourite pubs hereabouts.

The local area
Walcot Hall is an ideal place to join the trails of the Shropshire Hills (01588 674080). Many local footpaths skirt directly around the edge of the estate so it's easy to head directly into the countryside from camp. The Stiperstones (though a short drive away) are particularly beautiful, thick with heather, flourishing purple through spring and early summer, or walk famous Offa's Dyke (01547 528753) just a few miles from the site. The campsite is situated 3 miles from the small market town of Bishops Castle, renowned for its alternative, arty culture and friendly community, and is 30 minutes away from Ludlow and Shrewsbury.
Best local places to eat and drink
The campsite is directly to the rear of the Powis Arms (01588 680254), a delightful pub at the bottom of the Walcot Hall driveway. The pub serves bar meals at lunch and in the evening. There is also the village shop just a short walk away. Nearby Bishops Castle (with food shops and a petrol station) is know for its brilliant beers and homemade food. Pubs such as the Three Tuns (01588 638797), the Six Bells (01588 630144) and the Castle Hotel (01588 638403) are famous for their own home brews.
