The Castle Hotel
Once you get to the top of the main street of the tiny town of Bishop's Castle, which is where you'll find the Castle Hotel, you feel like you've really got away from it all. There are glorious views over the surrounding countryside, which is beckoning and accessible, and the hotel makes for an inspiring bolt-hole for aspirant walkers and cyclists, and is very family-friendly.
The Castle has been here since the early 18th century – owners Henry and Rebecca claim Clive of India was once the landlord here– and it's just our sort of place: comfy rather than posh, with 8 large and cosy rooms with flatscreen TVs, tea and coffee-making facilities and wifi throughout. There's a good restaurant downstairs serving a lovely menu that includes lots of local produce and a veggie option or two, a pleasant bar that is well used by locals and makes a point of serving proper brews from the local area, including the town's two micro-breweries the Three Tuns and Six Bells (the hotel has special rates on brewery tours for real enthusiasts). They also have a fantastic, almost Mediterranean-style garden that overlooks the Shropshire Hills from its high perch behind the hotel, and which is perfect for enjoying an early evening glass of wine from its covered arbours.
Finally, the Castle is one of the most dog-friendly hotels we know, which makes us like it even more – not only encouraging you to bring your pet but also providing a 'Dog Welcome Box' in the room that includes a feeding mat, food bowl, towel, lead, treats and even poo bags. Plus your hound might like to play with the owners' friendly dachshund Millie. In short we reckon the Castle is as friendly and relaxing a place to stay as you'll find – and situated in what is frankly a glorious location. A bit of a gem.
The Owner Says
The Castle Hotel was built 300 years ago out of the ruins of the old Bishop of Hereford's Castle, perched a-top-of the charming market town of Bishop's Castle. With uninterrupted panoramic views of the surrounding South Shropshire Hills a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), it really is the place to unwind with a pint of locally brewed real ale after a days walking in this exquisite corner of borderland countryside.
Our favourite room
Sit up on the hill top terrace gardens with a glass of wine or real ale brewed at one of the two breweries in Bishops Castle watching the red kites soar above.
The local area
Bishops Castle is a quirky, friendly and fiercely proud town with a fantastic heritage in traditional arts, crafts and music. It has long been a mecca for real ale lovers with The Three Tuns Brewery (the oldest licensed brewery in the country) located no more than a stone's throw from the hotel front door plus the equally well renowned Six Bells Brewery located a short walk down the high street hill.
Best local places to eat and drink
Choose to eat in one of our three bar areas or our oak-panelled dining room, or if the weather permits (the sun always shines in Bishops Castle) why not eat out in our gardens taking in the views, sunset & company. The choice is up to you.....
