A romantic, dog-friendly Herefordshire cabin among the treetops with an outdoor roll-top bath
Elevated among the trees of a Herefordshire woodland, The Treehouse is one of four contemporary and luxurious eco-friendly cabins at The Fold, a boutique luxury glamping site that’s peacefully reserved for adults only. This one puts you high above the woodland floor at canopy level, offering a window into a leafy world from the super-king-sized bed or its outdoor roll-top bath. That’s right, this timber-clad treehouse has both, and those aren't the only surprises.
You might picture a treehouse as a rustic affair, but step inside this one and you’ll see it’s sleeker than you might expect – a single, open-plan living space that’s light, airy and up-to-date, with a nod to mid-century design. Walls are painted white or panelled in an unobtrusive deep blue or grey; floors and furniture are the natural hues of light wood. There’s nothing to detract from what’s framed in the windows or the floor-to-ceiling glass doors at the foot of the king-size bed. The foreground is green leaves, while beyond are far-reaching valley views. You won't find a TV, but there is WiFi and you can charge devices via USB ports, but there are no three-pin plugs.
These are fantastic from inside, and all-encompassing from outside on the wraparound deck. There, you’ll find seating, a log burner and a barbecue, as well as that copper roll-top. There’s also a spot indoors for ablutions: an en-suite bathroom, which, like everything here, is eco-friendly – the toilet is composting, the water supply is from a spring (filtered and UV treated), and power is generated from the sun. There’s a log burner inside for your heating, too. This place is very much about the outdoors, and protecting it with these sustainable measures makes enjoying it even easier.
The Fold is part of a family farm, with 18 acres you’re welcome to explore, and easy access to local footpaths which tempt you further. The site is close to Vowchurch, part of Herefordshire’s Golden Valley around the River Dore. It’s a rural area, famed for its apples, and picking up local produce from farm shops to dig into back at The Treehouse is one of its pleasures. Hereford is 12 miles in one direction, Hay-on-Wye is 13 in the other, linked by the River Wye. For an adventurous day out, hire a canoe or kayak, or go for a hike in Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park.
Should you find The Treehouse is not available on the dates you want to stay, the other accommodation options at The Fold are no less lovely and just as eco-friendly. All have a hot tub or an outdoor bath – choose from The Nova Dome, The A Frame or The Scandi Cabin, which also has a private sauna.
