Cosy Rural Retreat

A floating luxury retreat for two on the Devon-Cornwall borders

Tregulland & Co's properties are always something special, and this latest addition to their roster of holiday properties in Cornwall and Devon is no exception – a floating luxury retreat that began life as a traditional narrow boat and has been re-imagined as a coolly elegant bolthole for two on a serene lake.

Most importantly, perhaps, they have found a bit of Southwest England that is a perfect pocket of peace. The lake is tranquil and still, fringed by reeds and mature trees, and while there are one or two other moored boats, Blackbird enjoys a secluded position out of view of any neighbours. No expense has been spared on board, where the open-plan living space has a crisp, contemporary look, decorated in cool greys and blues and furnished with a sofa and wood-burner; there's a fully fitted kitchen with a dining table for two and an exceptionally comfy king-sized bed with lake views with shower room and loo. Fancy a bath? Back on dry land the there's a little private boathouse with a separate loo and a lovely slipper bath with more watery views – perfect for an indulgent morning, evening, or even afternoon!

Off the boat, you can enjoy strolls through the 20 or so acres of woodland that surround the lake, set up by the water and catch a trout or two (the lake is teeming with them), or just enjoy a peace that is only broken by the sound of the local wildlife: lots of birds, bats at night and in summer lots of butterflies attracted by the wildflowers that grow nearby. If you can manage to tear yourself away from this idyllic spot, it's also worth knowing that you are just a 15-minute drive from the North Cornwall coast at Bude and Widemouth Bay, and also Hartland Point and Clovelly in Devon. You're also a mile or so outside the small Devon market town of Holsworthy, which has all the amenities you might need (shops, pubs, restaurants) including a busy market on Wednesdays. It's the perfect spot for a romantic West Country break.

Getting There

Take the A30 from the end of M5 at Exeter, towards Bodmin for 25 miles. At the Sourton Downjunction turn off towards Tavistock/Holsworthy and then turn right onto the A386 towards Holsworthy for about 2 miles until you hit a T junction. Turn left onto A3079 and continue for about 13 miles to Brandis Corner. Turn left onto the A3072 for 2 miles and at Anvil corner turn right towards Cookbury and Thornbury; after half a mile you will see Blagdon Water see the driveway signposted on your left. Don't follow Google Maps, which leaves you the wrong side of the fields!
