Hot tubs under the stars at this gloriously peaceful array of lakeside accommodation on the borders of Devon and Cornwall
Right on the borders of Devon and Cornwall, yet often overlooked by eager holiday folk keen to get down to the coast, Clawford Lakes sits in as peaceful a West Country location as you could wish for. Based around a series of tranquil lakes, the self-catering accommodation here would suit just about anyone, and while being a little bit off the beaten track it's worth remembering that it's just a few miles from the coast at Bude, a hop, skip and jump away from Dartmoor, and not a great deal further from Exmoor. In short, it's well placed for some of the major delights of both Devon and Cornwall, which is a major advantage in itself. Not only that: the accommodation at Clawford Lakes is as varied as it is comfortable, with a mixture of 'luxury cocoons', 'floating lodges', lakeside pods, apartments with hot tubs and regular 2-bed lodges dotted around its expansive site – all of them dog-friendly. First the Cocoons, which are extraordinary steel-and-canvas cabins that open onto a spacious deck by the lake; with room for up to 5 people, they are very well equipped, with an open-plan kitchen and living area, and have a certain 'wow' factor - not least when you gaze through the giant glass window at the view outside. Their 'Floating Lodges' are even more extraordinary: built on platforms on the lake and connected to the shore by pontoons, they sleep up to 6 people and are similarly well equipped, while the more functional and compact 'Lake Pods' sit on stilts above the water and can sleep up to two people – studios basically, with a double or twin bed in an open plan living area and kitchen. Beyond these options, there are also regular family lodges and apartments, some of which are very luxurious and look out over the water and have their own hot tubs from which you can make the most of the south-facing views, not to mention the night-time stars! All accommodation comes well equipped with towels, quality bed linen and kitchen essentials.
Finally there is plenty to do on the Clawford Lakes site, which has its own very inviting bar and restaurant along with a brand-new lakeside spa building, opening summer 2022, which features an infinity pool, sauna and lots of different treatments and therapies. There's a lake devoted to watersports – kayaking, paddleboarding and the like; you can go wild swimming or do a bit of fishing, and on a site of this size there are always walks and cycle rides you can do, with free bikes available for guests. Failing that, get out and see the nearby sights – visit the beaches at Bude, the wide open spaces of Dartmoor, or just pop into the nearby market town of Holsworthy for a taste of local life. The only thing you'll regret is not staying longer.
