Myth, magic and Macbeth all have their part to play in what makes staying at Dunsinnan Farm & Estate special. This historic land in the Perthshire countryside is home to the fifth generation of the Sinclair family and includes a pretty stone cottage and a cool contemporary cabin in a spot called Fairygreen Farm – with a re-imagined bothy on the way. They all look out on the Sidlaw Hills, with Dunsinane Hill looming large. It’s one of three peaks within the estate, famously featured in Shakespeare’s 'Macbeth' as well as for its Iron Age hillfort at the top.
The Cabin at Fairygreen is the more intimate of the accommodation on offer. It’s a pitched roof, Scottish timber-clad cabin that’s perfectly designed for two and has a romantic outdoor bath with views to die for. Painted black on the outside, but inside, its timber cladding is naturally hued. A vast window at the bed-end of this open-plan living space floods it with light and looks out towards the hills.
The hills and farmland are visible from every room of Fairygreen Cottage too. This is the family-sized option, although with two king-sized bedrooms and a pair of bathrooms, it works just as well for two couples. A former stockman’s cottage dating from 1872, there are stone walls to prove it. It’s as lovely inside as out, and everything is on one level, with an interior designer’s stamp on every room and a quality you can literally touch and feel. While the cabin has a fire pit outside and a kitchenette inside, the cottage boasts a log burner in the lounge and a kitchen that’s properly equipped, right down to a Nespresso machine.
If you don't want to cook, (you're on holiday after all!), you'll be pleased to know the closest pub is the Meikleour Arms, a few miles up the road, which does great pub food. When you’re out wandering around the picturesque town of Dunkeld – half an hour’s drive away on the banks of the River Tay – there are plenty of other places to check out. For example, the nearby Hermitage is a lovely place to stroll. Exploration doesn’t have to take you that far though. There are walking routes across the estate’s farmland, with tracks up those hills and plenty of wildlife to discover in its woodlands, alongside myth, magic and stories of Macbeth.
