The grand design of Architects Holiday is its simplicity. You head out to the East Sussex countryside and stay in a cabin that’s built for two. Your windows look out onto nature and your breakfast is from a farm shop just a few minutes’ walk away. You relax in green surroundings or by booking a session in the on-site sauna. Or maybe you go for a walk across fields and down country lanes to nearby Battle. As weekends in the countryside go, they don’t get much better designed than this.

The young team behind Architects Holiday has started a collection of cabins on a family farm in Catsfield, near Battle in East Sussex, just a couple of hours from London. Each offers something slightly different but all are designed to sleep two and offer self-contained, self-catering accommodation that’s well connected with the outdoors. Huge windows are a consistent feature. In Cabin X, they're at the foot of the bed and on two sides of the bathroom, so you sleep and shower surrounded by woodland. It's also been kept especially simple – an open-plan space with no WiFi or TV, and a basic kitchenette.

If pared-back living isn't for you, head to Hill Cabin instead. At first glance, this one shares the same look and feel – like Cabin X, it’s a timber building that's been retrofitted and extended, and its exterior is painted black with interior walls whitewashed. But Hill Cabin is much more modern and spacious. Its living space is open plan and the bedroom is separate. There's WiFi, a TV, and a hot tub outside too, and the views here are more open thanks to its hillside setting.

The choice is clear, but whichever cabin you go for, it’s not just the walls that are well designed but everything housed within them as well. The modern rustic look is all part of the plan, and Architects Holiday collaborates with independent designers to create beautifully bespoke furnishings and homeware. Many of their signature designs are available to buy online, so you can forever have a reminder of your dreamy cabin getaway.

Your breakfast comes from Great Park Farm, which is a short walk away from the cabins. It’s also the closest place for lunch or coffee if you don’t want to make your own, and to pick up supplies if you do. But this is leafy East Sussex and there are plenty of good pubs in the surrounding countryside as well. It’s also 1066 Country, with Battle a couple of miles’ walk across fields, and quirky, seaside Hastings just a 20-minute drive away.
