This resurgent coaching inn offers a great chance to spend some time exploring Holt and the nearby North Norfolk Coast
A small, picturesque and rather well-heeled town just a few miles from the North Norfolk Coast, Holt represents all that is best about this part of Norfolk – a thriving place with an elegant Georgian core that is both an appealing place to live and a thoroughly nice place to visit, full of galleries and antique dealers, restaurants and bookstores, which draw people from miles around. A town like this should always have a decent inn at its heart, and Holt does, in the recently revitalised Feathers, which occupies a prime position on the busy high street. Like all the best inns, it's a place to drink and a place to eat, but best of all it's a terrific place to stay, with 14 comfy bedrooms that make it possible for you to share the delights of Holt with its residents for a night or two.
Inside, it's a classic coaching inn in style, with an old-fashioned cosy bar, welcoming log fires and various snugs and lounges, some of which now house private dining spaces. Drink inside or on the outdoor terrace, and choose from a menu that revels in local produce, from coastal smokehouse salmon and local seafood to lamb and beef from nearby Swannington Farm. The guest rooms divide between the main building and The Lawns annexe 2 minutes' walk away, and are all modern and spacious, with decent-sized, recently refurbished bathrooms with toiletries, Freeview TVs, tea-and coffee-making facilities and either a double or a king-size bed. There are a couple of family rooms in the main building (complete with bunk beds), and those in The Lawns are also good for families, while all the rest have walk-in showers and also welcome dogs – who get a bed, towel and water bowl for their trouble!
Wake up early to enjoy an excellent breakfast and Holt is all yours to explore, before heading off to the coast either by car, on foot or bike, or on the North Norfolk Railway to Sheringham, whose southernmost terminus lies just outside the town. Truly a great spot for a weekend away.
