A friendly local pub that offers good food and boutique rooms right in the heart of Blakeney

It's hard to believe now but Blakeney was once one of the most prominent ports on the North Norfolk Coast. Nowadays, it's a small and pretty collection of flint cottages sloping down to a small harbour, where the silty water and the views over the marshes  tell you why it's no longer a major trading port. It's a lovely place to spend a few days, and the quayside Blakeney Hotel rents out pricey rooms to those so inclined. But Blakeney is the sort of place you might want to savour in a salty old inn or pub with rooms, and The White Horse, just footsteps from the waterfront, is an ideal place to do just that.

An old coaching inn that's been recently absorbed into the local Chestnut collection, it retains the fee of a proper local pub but at the same time its nine rooms offer characterful and stylish accommodation – light and bright spaces with en-suite bathrooms equipped with either bath or shower and everything you need for a comfy stay – tea and coffee-making facilities, a hairdryer, WiFi, fresh towels and toiletries. Some rooms have views of the marshes while others look over the High Street. There is a selection of large and small doubles and twins, a family room (with space for up to 6 people in a double and on bunks and a sofa bed), and one room is dog-friendly.

There's on-site parking and the pub serves excellent food on an imaginative and hearty menu in its spacious bar and lovely conservatory and sheltered courtyard – burgers and fish and chips, steaks and fish and seafood dishes, all beautifully cooked and presented and very moderately priced, especially bearing in mind the location. They also serve a fine breakfast, which is included in the price you pay.

And Blakeney? It's a special place to spend a few days, with multiple walks across the marshes, trips to see the seals at Blakeney Point (also walkable along the shingle and sand dunes), and nearby sights like the nature reserve at Cley, the beaches at Wells and neighbouring Holkham, or the fancy Georgian town of Holt, just a few miles inland.
