Overlooking the sea on the southernmost point of Cornwall's Rame Peninsula, this unique holiday apartment occupies part of the Old Signalhouse, which was originally the home of the staff and families who manned the Eddystone Lighthouse seven miles offshore. It's a fabulous old building, located in a wonderfully isolated spot on the Penlee Point headland, at the end of its own mile-long drive through the woodlands of the Mount Edgcumbe Estate. The house sits at the foot of a flight of 84 steps just above the rocks and as you might expect enjoys magnificent sea views, not to mention its own sandy beach, accessible by way of a private path. It feels marvellously remote, yet you are just across the water from the city of Plymouth and its expansive harbour, which you can reach by ferry. This three-bedroom apartment is arranged over two floors, with an open-plan living area on the upper floor and three bedrooms on the lower level. The location is to die for, but the apartment couldn't be nicer, bright and sunny and beautifully furnished. The sitting room boasts amazing sea views and there's a fitted and full equipped contemporary kitchen with a dining space attached plus a front terrace with outdoor furniture to once again drink in those wonderful views. The bedrooms include a double with en-suite bathroom, a bunk-bedded room with en-suite bathroom and a twin bedroom with access to the family bathroom.
As for things to do, the coast path passes right by the property and you can do a great five-mile circular walk that brings you back to your front door. Rame Head is a lovely half-hour walk along the coastal path, and there are various nearby sandy coves and beaches like Penlee Point (a short scramble along the path), Whitsand Bay, which at low tide extends for four miles, and Cawsand Bay and Kingsand Bay, whose villages are also worth a visit for shops and pubs. During summer you can also take the ferry from Cawsand to Plymouth for a spot of shopping and culture – it only takes half an hour and the town has plenty of bars and restaurants, the Drake Centre shopping centre, plus a museum devoted to the Mayflower, the national marine aquarium and various other museums and art galleries.
