You find Lowfield House among the cottages and stone-walled fields of the Lake District’s Little Langdale valley. It’s bigger than many of its neighbours but dwarfed by the surrounding fells; a combination that makes it a fantastic place to stay. It sleeps 10 in five bedrooms that all have en-suite bathrooms. Built in the 1960s and renovated in the last few years, it boasts large rooms and, importantly, big windows that make the most of those spectacular views. The garden, terrace and hot tub help with that too.

There’s a professional finish to the place, all white walls and recessed spotlights with quirky design pieces and wallpaper here and there, but it’s also a place with heart. This is a family-owned holiday home, passed down three generations from the couple who built it. They were once owners of the local pub, The Three Shires, just a short stroll away. Antique furniture and maps they collected remain alongside the comfy sofas and contemporary prints that have brought Lowfield House bang up-to-date.

Downstairs, hallways connect a modern, well-equipped kitchen with three comfy living spaces. The biggest of these is combined with the dining room. In good weather, the doors to the terrace and garden can be flung open wide, but if clouds form over the fells and Lake District drizzle sets in, this space is still a joy. Just turn on the real-flame gas fire and watch the dramatic weather unfold. This house works well in all weathers, thanks to the fact you can spread out. That sense of spaciousness extends to the bedrooms which are blissfully all en suite with walk-in showers or free-standing baths. The double rooms have either a king or a super-king-size bed, while the two twins have a generous pair of doubles.

Little Langdale is pretty much the midpoint of the Lake District. It’s level with Ambleside and the northern reaches of Windermere, but tucked away, four miles to the west. A custom-made map by Lowfield’s hosts highlights the best walks and places to visit in a valley they’ve been exploring all their lives. They’ve shared tips for the wider Lake District too; anywhere could be reached in the car. But do make sure to stay local and raise a glass to the people who enabled your holiday here, by making at least one trip to The Three Shires, just down the road.
