The picture-perfect hamlet of Elterwater has a picture-perfect pub, the Britannia, with a large slate terrace overlooking the green. It’s on the footpath that leads further up into Langdale, so it gets a steady stream of hikers, happy to freshen up with a big mug of tea or a pint of real ale. Bar meals are good – homemade pies, Cumberland sausage, fish and chips, slow-cooked lamb – and you can eat in the bar or dining room, though you might want to book ahead in summer and school holidays as come the sun, come the hordes. Rooms upstairs are cosy and traditional.
