Boutique rooms and first-rate food in a gorgeous Lakeland location
It means 'Number One' in local dialect, and there's a good chance that The Yan will be number one on your agenda after spending a night or two here or eating in the downstairs bistro. Part of the successful The Yan at Broadrayne business, which also includes glamping and a set of comfy holiday cottages, the bistro with rooms is their latest venture. A short hop north of Grasmere, it occupies a lovely old country property that enjoys wonderful views over the surrounding landscape and is decorated in a rustic contemporary style that will make anyone feel at home.
The seven upstairs rooms are each individually decorated and come in various shapes and sizes, as you would expect in a historic building like this; there are three cosy standard rooms and four deluxe rooms (with a full-sized double sofa bed) that will easily accommodate a family of four, and two dog-friendly rooms – a nice thought in what is so obviously a dog-friendly environment. All of the rooms are equipped with Smart TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities, great WiFi and super-king-sized beds with good quality linen, and the beds can be changed into twins, if you prefer. Bathrooms are crisp and modern and come with rainfall showers and backlit heated mirrors.
Downstairs, there's a comfy open-plan lounge decorated in a similarly contemporary yet cosy country style, and the bistro, which serves hearty British fare from 3pm till 9pm at great prices – just the sort of food you need after walking the fells, including a choice of sumptuous sharing platters as well as a range of delicious breakfast dishes. Owners Dave and Sally are usually around, as is their daughter Jess, who's the Operations Director of the farm, while her husband and Executive Chef Will oversees the kitchen. All in all, then, a family affair, offering beautiful, very well-priced boutique rooms and great food in a gorgeous location. A winning formula, if ever there was one!
