Handsomely sited on the shores of Ullswater, Another Place, The Lake is one of our favourite Lake District hotels – a stylish yet unstuffy sort of place, family friendly too, with romantic lake views, three good restaurants and a great pool. In short, it's a terrific base for exploring the Northern Lakes, and they offer 47 comfy en-suite rooms and suites, plus options in the grounds including shepherd’s huts and a treehouse to make the most of the outdoors while still enjoying all the comforts of a top-quality hotel on your doorstep – guests have full access to the swimming pool, eateries, Kids’ Zone, sports, and their take on a spa.

Clad with sustainable French oak, each of the six beautifully handcrafted shepherds huts is in fact made up of two shepherd huts bolted together, so there's much more space than you might be expecting. They're more outdoor hotel suites than rooms if we're honest, equipped with stargazing roofs over double beds, a seating area warmed by a wood-burning stove, private en-suite bathroom and individual outside terraces with bean bags and firepits for marshmallow toasting. Those provided with free-standing deep copper baths are designed for a couple, while the family-size huts have bunk beds for small children – all within easy reach of the main hotel building, so you can easily access the pool, sauna, restaurants, kitchen pantries and public areas.

The Treehouse is even more of a treat, connected to the main hotel by glazed walkways, and provided with two bedrooms – a large double and a twin, each of which have floor-to-ceiling views of the lake. With an oak-floored living area and bathroom, wood-burner, they call it their largest suite and they're not joking: secluded and private, it blends effortlessly into the surrounding trees. You can have a good soak in the free-standing bath on its outdoor deck, before heading off to the hotel for dinner or opting for a wood-fired pizza at The Glasshouse, where you can also eat breakfast (we love the waffles) and lunch or even take part on a yoga workshop!

As for the location, you're right on the banks of England's second-largest lake, perfectly placed for any number of outdoor activities, including cold water and wild swimming, stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking – the 'Sheep Shed' by the shore has changing facilities and showers for this. You can also explore the lake on the famous Ullswater Steamer, or undertake any number of walks both near and far, including one to or from the equally renowned Aira Force waterfall a little way down the lake – all good ways to work up an appetite to enjoy a meal in one of the hotel's three excellent restaurants.
