Clifton’s George and Dragon makes a great base for touring around Penrith, Ullswater and the Eden Valley. The old Georgian inn – part of the local Lowther Estate – looks age-old traditional from the outside, but inside it’s had a zippy designer makeover.
The lovely, compact rooms mix pretty fabrics, mod cons and paintings and antique furnishings from the Lowther collection to great effect. Bathrooms are nice and bijou too, many with either walk-in showers or roll-top baths – the deluxe ’Lonsdale’ room has both. All in all, it’s a very handsome space throughout, while for great food and drink, all you have to do is trip downstairs to the relaxing bar and lovely restaurant. There, you'll be served fresh, seasonal produce from the owner's family estate and kitchen garden at nearby sister establishment Askham Hall.
