Midway between Kendal and Windermere, The Watermill Inn is tucked away in a quiet spot just a few hundred yards from the A591, in the tiny village of Ings. You’re within easy striking distance of dozens of beautiful walks – in the nearby Kentmere Valley or up on Scout Scar near Kendal – while the pub itself offers all-day dining, and benefits from being attached to the excellent Windermere Brewery, whose ales you can sup in the bar. There are 8 bedrooms, all very homely, and decorated in keeping with the age of the building, although taller guests will need to watch out for the odd low beam. There are 6 doubles, 1 single and a family room, all with tea- and coffee-making facilities, TV and wifi and bathrooms with toiletries and decent showers. The Watermill is also one of the lakes’ most dog-friendly pubs, with dogs welcome in all rooms and the bar and snug, dog portraits on the walls and even a special page in the bar menu dedicated to canine treats. For every dog that stays with them, The Watermill makes a donation to The Dogs Trust!
