A beautiful Grade II-listed country house hotel right on the shores of Lake Windermere.

With a position to die for right on the shores of Lake Windermere, Storrs Hall is like no other hotel in the area – a family owned and run country house hotel that combines a low-key intimacy with every contemporary comfort you could wish for. Situated in a beautiful Grade II-listed Georgian mansion, it has  36 rather special guest rooms, some of which are dog-friendly, a cosy bar and excellent restaurant and 17 partially wooded acres of  lakeside grounds. It's also just a five-minute drive from the tourist honeypot of Bowness-on-Windermere. Little wonder that it was featured as one of Top 80 British Hotels in The Times in 2020.

The 30 rooms in the hotel's main house range from cosy Classic rooms through to Superior and larger Deluxe rooms that come with or without lake views. Individually designed with a contemporary country feel and furnished with king-size beds, tea-and coffee-making facilities, good wifi and recently fitted bathrooms. The main difference between the different categories – and rates – is mainly in the size of the rooms and bathrooms and whether they have a view of the lake. In addition there are six very contemporary (adults-only) glass-walled lakeside suites – Japanese in feel,  open plan and spacious, with super-king-size beds, free-standing baths, separate walk-in showers, Smart TVs and a private terrace with a hot tub and gorgeous views of the lake  There's also the centuries-old stone Boathouse, which has been refurbished as a private hideaway for two right by the lake, complete with its own lake-facing terrace, fire pit and hot tub.

Service throughout the hotel is terrific, and the hotel has a properly enticing bar,  the Tower Bar, so named for its ornate wooden bar which came from Blackpool Tower. They serve a menu of staples and classics between noon and 9pm while a more formal restaurant with gorgeous views of the lake serves a refined and locally sourced menu each evening and on Sunday lunchtime – think roast pigeon breasts with celeriac remoulade, Cumbrian beef fillet or chalk stream trout, all beautifully presented. They'll also sort you out a packed lunch or picnic if you're taking off fore the day on a hike; for the less energetic, afternoon tea is served every day from 12.30pm to 4.30pm.

Finally, at Storrs Hall you are excellently placed for seeing some of the best features of the southern Lakes – from the water-borne activities of Lake Windermere itself to the Beatrix Potter-related attractions of Bowness and further afield to Ambleside, about 15 minutes' away by car. But we wouldn't blame if you just decided to stay put – the hotel's grounds offer easy woodland walks, lakeside lounging and boat trips from the jetty, and once here, there's a good chance you won't want to leave.
