With a position to die for right on the shores of Lake Windermere, Storrs Hall is like no other hotel in the area – a family owned and run country house that combines low-key intimacy with every contemporary comfort you could wish for. Situated in a beautiful Grade II-listed Georgian mansion, it has  35 rather special guest rooms, some of which are dog-friendly, a cosy bar and excellent restaurant and 17 partially wooded acres of  lakeside grounds. It’s also just a five-minute drive from the tourist honeypot of Bowness-on-Windermere. Little wonder that it was featured as one of The Times’ Top 80 British Hotels a few years back.

The 28 rooms in the hotel’s main house range from cosy Classic rooms through to Superior and larger Deluxe rooms that come with or without lake views. Individually designed with a contemporary country feel, they’re furnished with king-size beds, tea-and coffee-making facilities, good wifi and recently fitted bathrooms. The main difference between the different categories – and rates – is mainly in the size of the rooms and bathrooms and whether they have a view of the lake. In addition there are six very contemporary (adults-only) glass-walled lakeside suites and a unique converted Boathouse for two, complete with lake-facing terrace, fire pit and hot tub.

The Lakeside suites are inspired by the classic Georgian style of the main house and the natural environment they nestle in, and they have incredible views of the lake. They’re somewhat Japanese in feel, open plan and spacious, with super-king-size beds, chaise-longues, free-standing baths, separate walk-in showers, Smart TVs and a private terrace with a Japanese cedar hot tub. To top off this luxury lakeside experience, you’re welcomed on arrival with complimentary wine and beer, jelly beans and biscuits, and the fridge will be replenished throughout your stay. It’s catered accommodation, so there is the option of a room service breakfast hamper, or you have short access to the main hotel facilities. Whether you laze on the terrace with a book, utilise the space for some forest bathing therapy crossed with yoga, or enjoy a hot coffee after a dip in the lake, they work a welcoming magic. There’s nothing else quite like them.

Service throughout the hotel is terrific, and the hotel has a properly enticing bar,  the Tower Bar, so named for its ornate wooden bar which came from Blackpool Tower. They serve a menu of staples and classics between noon and 9pm while a more formal restaurant with gorgeous views of the lake serves a refined and locally sourced menu each evening and on Sunday lunchtime. They’ll also sort you out a packed lunch or picnic if you’re taking off for the day on a hike; for the less energetic, afternoon tea is served every day from 12.30pm to 4.30pm.

Nearby

We are right on the lake shore so any watersport is available from our door - we also have some beautiful walks on the fell behind us where you don't need to get in the car.

Our 'Thing To Do' page on storrshall.com has loads of information about the area, whatever your interest is, whether extreme adventure or culture is your thing. The lakes are called the Outdoor Adventure Capital of the UK with good reason, from Winter ice mountaineering to wild swimming. William Wordsworth invented the Romantic Movement here, (and his friend Thomas De Quincy created the genre, addiction literature). Beatrix Potter created some of the most loved characters in children's literature.

We're1.5 miles from the lakeside village of Bowness, but offer lesser known destinations for days out. You can make a day of being by the seaside and then back by England's largest lake for dinner.

Food & Drink

We have 2 great restaurants here at Storrs, serving lovingly made local produce; our A La Carte restaurant, and as from September 2023 our new Bistro.

Cumbria is known for its number of Michelin Star restaurants, including Simon Rogan's 3 Michelin Star L'Enclume. Storrs makes a great central base if you're planning a gourmet break in the lakes.

The Owner Says

Storrs Hall is quite unique in the Lake District - is not a usual as you would expect to find such a beautiful hotel in a peaceful lakeside setting.
Storrs is a Grade II listed Georgian Country House, purposely converted into a hotel about 100 years after it was built with the addition of a 3 story wing. It sits in 17 acres of completely private grounds which slope right down to the lakeshore, with miles of sensational lake and mountain views.
Beautiful as it is, our priority is that you feel welcome and relaxed. We aim to deliver excellent and friendly service, and provide everything you might need to have a great time in the lakes.
We have our own vintage Thames Slipper Launch, which is available for private skippered tours of the lake, including a complimentary  bottle of Prosecco.
There is a choice of accommodation - each offering a different way to experience this quintessentially Lake District location. The main house has Georgian and Victorian splendour, the rooms are furnished with huge comfy beds and a mix of antique furniture. All our bathrooms are contemporary, all with walk-in showers, and most have a bath too.
The Lakeside Hot Tub Suites are our newest addition, six open plan spaces, each with its own front door and private terrace looking onto wild gardens or over the lake, they all have glass walls that slide back opening on to the terrace - complete with seating and a Japanese style hot tub.
Most exclusive of all is the Boathouse, original to the Georgian house, set in its own grounds accessed by your private code, it also has a large terrace complete with lily pond - right  by the lake. The terrace is furnished with plenty of seating, a covered hot tub, and a fire-pit. Inside it has been converted to contain all the 21st Century luxuries, with a vast bed and sofa in the open plan room, a butler's pantry, stocked every day with complimentary snacks and drinks; there's also a big bathroom that includes a steam room.
You'll not go hungry, we have two restaurants serving A La Carte and Bistro menus, plus a room service, and lounge menu, and Afternoon Teas! We also have a 'public house' style bar - salvaged from Blackpool Tower no less. You don't need to leave us to have the complete Lake District Break.
