A beautiful Grade II-listed country house hotel right on the shores of Lake Windermere

With a position to die for right on the shores of Lake Windermere, Storrs Hall is like no other hotel in the area – a family owned and run country house hotel that combines a low-key intimacy with every contemporary comfort you could wish for. Situated in a beautiful Grade II-listed Georgian mansion, it has  36 rather special guest rooms, some of which are dog-friendly, a cosy bar and excellent restaurant and 17 partially wooded acres of  lakeside grounds. It's also just a five-minute drive from the tourist honeypot of Bowness-on-Windermere. Little wonder that it was featured as one of Top 80 British Hotels in The Times in 2020.

The 28 rooms in the hotel's main house range from cosy Classic rooms through to Superior and larger Deluxe rooms that come with or without lake views. Individually designed with a contemporary country feel and furnished with king-size beds, tea-and coffee-making facilities, good wifi and recently fitted bathrooms. The main difference between the different categories – and rates – is mainly in the size of the rooms and bathrooms and whether they have a view of the lake. In addition there are six very contemporary (adults-only) glass-walled lakeside suites and a converted Boathouse for two.

Service throughout the hotel is terrific, and the hotel has a properly enticing bar,  the Tower Bar, so named for its ornate wooden bar which came from Blackpool Tower. They serve a menu of staples and classics between noon and 9pm while a more formal restaurant with gorgeous views of the lake serves a refined and locally sourced menu each evening and on Sunday lunchtime – think roast pigeon breasts with celeriac remoulade, Cumbrian beef fillet or chalk stream trout, all beautifully presented. They'll also sort you out a packed lunch or picnic if you're taking off fore the day on a hike; for the less energetic, afternoon tea is served every day from 12.30pm to 4.30pm.

As well as their main building rooms and suites, Storrs also has a range of Lakeside suites and a private hire Boathouse, which has been refurbished as a private hideaway for two right by the lake, complete with its own lake-facing terrace, fire pit and hot tub.

The Lakeside suites are inspired by the classic Georgian style of the main house and the natural environment they nestle in, providing a luxurious and comfortable space surrounded by the natural world with incredible views of the lake. They're somewhat Japanese in feel, open plan and spacious, with super-king-size beds, chaise-longues, free-standing baths, separate walk-in showers, Smart TVs and a private terrace with a Japanese cedar hot tub. To top off this luxury lakeside experience, you're welcomed on arrival with complimentary wine and beer, jelly beans and biscuits, and the fridge will be replenished throughout your stay. It's a catered accommodation, so there is the option of a room service breakfast hamper, or you have short access to the main hotel facilities. Whether you laze on the terrace with a book, utilise the space for some forest bathing therapy crossed with yoga, or enjoy a hot coffee after a dip in the lake, they work a welcoming magic. There’s nothing else quite like them.

The suites Tern and Teal are accessible for people with limited mobility, and wheelchair users, with car access to the suites. The location of the suites is on a stone outcrop surrounded by woodland, direct car access is recommended for wheelchair users.

The Boathouse is another boast-worthy place to stay. It's a beautiful conversion for exclusive hire for two, with a panoramic view of Lake Windermere, with your own private grounds, parking and large terrace housing your hot tub, fire pit, seating, and lily filled pond. The space inside is also extremely luxurious and comfortable, with an open place space looking straight out onto the views and featuring freestanding duo bath, steamroom and spa shower.

Finally, at Storrs Hall you are excellently placed for seeing some of the best features of the southern Lakes – from the water-borne activities of Lake Windermere itself to the Beatrix Potter-related attractions of Bowness and further afield to Ambleside, about 15 minutes' away by car. But we wouldn't blame if you just decided to stay put – the hotel's grounds offer easy woodland walks, lakeside lounging and boat trips from the jetty, and once here, there's a good chance you won't want to leave.

Open all year.

From £210 a night with breakfast for a Classic room with lake views, £520 a night with breakfast for a Lakeside suite.
