Canal Foot in Ulverston is one of Cumbria’s best kept secrets – perennially popular with locals, and with far reaching views across Morecambe Bay, this gentle two-mile walk along the adjacent canal is really is hard to fault. And in a world of identikit pub chains, The Bay Horse is unique and properly welcoming, with a cosy pub area and gorgeous conservatory/ dining section, and glorious year-round views. Lesley and Robert have created a ‘proper’ pub, one that is at the heart of the local community – they are open from 9am serving coffee and breakfast and most mornings the place is comfortably buzzing with people enjoying a read of the newspaper over a freshly made brew, often with a dog snoozing at their feet. The rooms are smart, comfortable, and stylish with plenty of homely touches and outstanding sea views, and the pub is steeped in local history: before the arrival of the roads and railways it was the start/ end point for cross bay commuters and the walls of the pub are a tribute to the many colourful regulars who have frequented the establishment over the years. The food is home cooked – Robert trained under celebrity chef John Tovey – and is always plentiful and locally sourced wherever possible. They are also great supporters of local brewers and distillers so, if you fancy trying a proper Cumbrian brew, this is the place to come.
