This coaching inn has offered comfortable lodging to travellers, in the quiet Winster valley, since the 1850's
Winster is an area popular with locals and well tucked away from the busy spots, but this quiet valley has so much to offer. The Brown Horse has some lovely walks right from the door and plenty of other places to explore nearby – if you want an insider tip, try Barkbooth Lot, a Cumbria Wildlife Trust nature reserve, usually deserted but perfect for an afternoon stroll, especially when the bluebells are in full swing. Situated on an old trading route The Brown Horse was once an important coaching house for traffic and goods travelling between Kendal and Windermere. If you like your history then ask for directions to two very pretty packhorse bridges nearby, and the tiny local church is well worth a visit too. The rooms at The Brown Horse are contemporary and comfortable with the occasional fun, quirky feature, and while all of them boast wonderful views, four of them have the benefit of being in a separate building with their own small patio area and achingly pretty views across the valley. The perfect place to enjoy a long summer’s evening in Cumbria. The dining area is spacious and well laid out and, even on a busy night, it doesn’t feel cramped. The food is classy, imaginative and plentiful with numerous options for those on restricted diets, and their cheeseboard is a thing of beauty, containing a good selection of classic and local cheeses to choose from, so be sure to leave plenty of room for it.
