A cute and quirky contemporary hideaway for two in North Yorkshire
The heritage trains of the Wensleydale Railway stop just a hop and a skip away from The Roost Retreat. Both the trains and the hopping and skipping seem appropriate ways to get to this little bolthole for two in North Yorkshire. It’s a cute little place that’ll make you smile. Once an orangery attached to its owner’s home, it now provides self-catering that's just right for a couple or a solo traveller who want a comfy base from which to explore the Yorkshire Dales or the North York Moors as it's handily situated between them. Oh yes, and a four-poster bed to sleep in!
Also handy is the village location, which puts you within walking distance of the nearest shop and the nearest restaurant, The Reubens. Plus there’s Mason’s Gin distillery, a five-minute walk away where a tour and tasting is rather tempting. But if you don’t want to eat out, there’s enough at The Roost to prepare simple meals, with a small kitchen cabin a few steps away from the main accommodation plus a barbecue on the patio for when the weather is fine.
Your view from the patio, and out the French doors that front your accommodation, is across the mature front garden of this former farm. It’s that history that inspired the name and the decor of The Roost Retreat. There’s a chicken theme, but it’s subtle; a few nods here and there, and the overall effect is light, airy and clean thanks to high ceilings, glass-fronted doors and a white and light-grey colour scheme that extends to the feature four-poster in the bedroom. It’s the same in the modern en-suite bathroom which features a rainfall shower.
Leeming Bar, where you'll find The Roost, is a small village on the route of the original Great North Road. Now bypassed by the A1, it still provides a handy way to explore the many attractions and natural splendour of God’s Own Country and beyond. But by far the best way to explore if you’re headed for the Dales is to jump aboard the heritage trains of the nearby railway. Leeming Bar station is only a minute’s walk from The Roost and you can use it to steam to the picturesque Georgian town of Bedale or all the way to Redmire (reopening in 2025), within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Not suitable for toddlers or children under 7 years. One child allowed, staying with one parent during the Wensleydale Polar Express Train Ride in November and December by prior arrangement. Leeming Bar is very centrally located in North Yorkshire for a wide range of beautiful places to visit. In the village itself, there is Masons of Yorkshire Gin that host gin tours and themed supper evenings, by pre-booking. There is also the Wensleydale Heritage Railway where trains run up into Leyburn and scheduled to extend once more to Redmire, later in 2025, which is right in the heart of James Herriot Country. Trains run regularly from March through to October, with the Wensleydale Polar Express in the run up to Christmas and steam train Mince Pie Specials running between Christmas and New Year. Special Events Trains including Afternoon Tea, Fish & Chip Trains, Curry Night Train are held regularly. Booking is essential via their website.There is a regular half-hourly bus service to the market towns of Bedale and Northallerton. A short drive away from The Roost Retreat is Wensleydale and Swaledale with Aysgarth Falls, Hawes with its' Creamery (famous for Wensleydale Cheese and Wallace and Gromit!), Castle Bolton and an abundance of beautiful walks. Also within 20 minute drive is Fountains Abbey, the cathedral city of Ripon, Mount Grace Priory, Thorp Perrow Arboretum, Richmond, Masham, Yorkshire Dales National Park (20 min drive) and North Yorkshire Moors (45 min drive).
Food & Drink
The closest pub/restaurant to us is the Reubens where a range of good evening meals are served Wednesday to Saturday and Sunday for lunch. Closed to non-residents Monday and Tuesday. Dog-friendly in the bar area.For those wishing to treat themselves to a high-end dining experience or for a special occasion, we can highly recommend the fabulous Hansom Restaurant and Wine Bar in Bedale, two miles away. This excellent restaurant is included in the Michelin Guide and provide a private taxi service (electric Lotus) to and from the restaurant. This service is complimentary if dining on the Tasting Menu. Out of this world Sunday Lunches and amazing Tasting Menu with wine pairing.

The Owner Says
The Roost Retreat is not your usual holiday home, it benefits from generous off-road parking, with both the large front garden and parking exclusive to you during your stay. We reside at the back of our property with our own allocated parking and gardens. Our little retreat is very quiet, a characteristic home-from-home with everything you need, including lots of extras. For guests staying three or more nights, there will be milk, a range of beverages, biscuits and homemade marmalade and jam waiting for you. There is a range of books, board games and a Smart TV with streaming channels. If you are looking for lots of razzmatazz, discos, pub/nightlife, bowling alleys and a city experience, you will not find this at The Roost! Same goes for hot tubs, pizza ovens and swimming pools, we do not provide these facilities, although we do have a barbeque for guest use. We are perfect for those who wish a quiet, tranquil, relaxing stay in a working North Yorkshire village which is very central to all the Yorkshire National Parks. The Roost Retreat is only suitable for couples and solo travellers, we do not allow party bookings or wedding guests.

Leave the A1 at junction 51, signposted for Leeming Bar. Follow the A684 and Leases Road into the village. At the roundabout just past Wensleydale Railway Station, take the second exit onto Bedale Road and then an almost left onto Leeming Road and another onto Leeming Lane to find The Roost Retreat.
Main line station - Northallerton. Bus links: Proctors route 73 Monday - Saturday, buses direct to Northallerton station. Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays, route 856. Trains to Bedale and Leyburn from Leeming Bar station on the Wensleydale Railway line.

Great dog-friendly accommodation in North Yorkshire with lovely hosts
We had the pleasure of staying with Claire and Simon at their B&B in Northumberland a few years ago and were initially sorry to hear about their move to North Yorkshire but then keen to stay at their new self-catering accommodation when we heard that it is dog-friendly. We had a four-night stay last weekend and, aside from torrential rain on the Saturday, had a great stay. The bedroom is very comfortable, the bathroom is a good size, and the separate kitchenette is very useful to have for basic food preparation and eating. Claire welcomed us to the property and showed us around. It's immediately evident that there is great attention to details. There were useful basics (milk, bread, eggs) and tasty extras (artisan cookies, home-made greengage jam and Seville orange marmalade) for us and dog biscuits, towels, blankets and bedding for our pooch. The secure garden is a massive bonus for people with a dog and he much enjoyed roaming around it and making friends with people passing by the gate. The property is only a five minute walk from the Leeming Bar terminus of the Wensleydale Heritage Railway and we had a lovely day in Leyburn and Bedale via the train, and there are lots of interesting places to visit within an hour's drive. We particularly recommend Hearts of Ampleforth for breakfast/brunch/coffee if you visit the North York Moors National Park, Rievaulx Abbey, etc.

Lots of thoughtful little extras
We have stayed several times before with the previous owners. The Roost Retreat is ideally positioned for our visits to the dales, with its own private off-road parking. The new owners Simon and Claire have kept up the very high standards. With lots of thoughtful little extras which were very welcome. Simon and Claire are very friendly, the perfect hosts.

My Mum & I stayed at The Roost beginning of February. We found our stay very enjoyable and comfortable. Anything we would have needed was available and our hosts were very welcoming and helpful. Would recommend to anyone wanting a night or 2 close to The Dales and lots of other local attractions.
