It's a pretty safe bet that you won't have stayed in a B&B quite like this one before. Located just off the bottom of Market Place, Richmond's Millgate House is quite simply extraordinary – a Georgian townhouse of lavish, theatrical elegance sitting above a magical, sheltered walled garden with views down to the River Swale and its waterfalls. It's won almost every award going – the Good Hotel Guide's B&B of the Year for 2011, for example – with visitors charmed and amazed in equal measure by a house that is positively stuffed with antiques and art.
There are eye-opening curios and wonderfully ornate pieces at every turn, and while all the three main rooms are lovely in their way, the two overlooking the garden (one twin, one double) have the finest aspect – and we particularly like being able to step out of a free-standing Edwardian bath onto a Turkish rug, in front of a cast-iron fireplace. Meanwhile, in the glorious garden-view dining room, a splendid breakfast on polished mahogany tables is less a mere meal and more an experience.
There's also a self-contained (and self-catering) romantic garden apartment (available by the night), with a lovely en-suite double, living room and open fire and a further stylishly converted Coach House at the foot of the gardens which has another five en-suite rooms plus full kitchen (this is available for whole-house lets only through Cottage4you). The owners, Austin and Tim, have been here thirty seven years and have made Millgate House and its garden a place very much in their own image – charming, discreet and hugely likeable. Trust us, you won't want to leave.
