Nestled on the border of Northumberland and County Durham, Cronkley Cottage stands on the edge of the peaceful Derwent Reservoir, offering views across the water from every one of its well-appointed rooms. You can gaze at the ever-changing scene outside from the comfort of your bed or snuggled up on the sofa of this gem of a holiday home. Situated within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this two-bedroomed, beautifully renovated traditional stone cottage sits on a farmstead with origins that trace back to the 13th-century, far predating the water it overlooks. However, while its foundations are historic, the cottage interior is anything but. Sensitively and thoughtfully renovated, it’s a supremely comfortable place to stay in a location that’s close to many of Northumberland’s highlights. In addition to walks, cycling, fishing and watersports on your doorstep, there’s loads of places to visit in the area including Corbridge, Hexham and Hadrian’s Wall which are all within a 30 minute drive.

However you spend your days, Cronkley Cottage warmly welcomes you back home. In winter, the underfloor heating and log burner take care of that. In summer, the barbecue and fire pit are all that you need while you make the most of Northumberland’s famously dark and starry night skies. A telescope is provided for a closer view – one of several thoughtful touches that help you make the most of your stay.

Indoors, there is a Smart TV with surround sound, high speed Starlink WiFi, and a cupboard with a selection of board games, plus a box of toys to keep the kids entertained. This holiday home is perfect for a family of four or five but also works well for two couples, with a second bedroom featuring a zip-and-link bed that can be converted to either a super-king or two singles (with a small trundle bed underneath). And if your family includes a dog, they are most welcome here too. They’ll certainly enjoy the myriad of walks nearby.

The style inside is fresh and modern but tastefully understated which means it doesn’t distract from the views framed in every window. Deep blues, splashes of colour and the natural hues of leather, wood and coir sit against white washed walls. There are lots of curves instead of corners and well considered design features throughout. It’s all balanced masterfully and much of it celebrates the biggest attraction of all: Northumberland’s great outdoors – in particular, the beckoning presence of the Derwent Reservoir and its walking and cycling trail, top quality fishing, and watersports.

The Owner Says

We think that Cronkley is a truly special place in the world. Every time we arrive, there’s that magical moment when we drive down the lane and catch our first glimpse of the shimmering water.  It’s where we escape with our three young kids to spend long days walking by the reservoir, exploring the local area, and enjoying cozy evenings together on the huge sofa by the log burner. One of our favourite things is watching how the sunlight moves around the cottage – pouring into the end bedroom at sunrise, bathing the front of the cottage in light during the day, and finally setting to the west as we prepare dinner. Our kids adore toasting marshmallows on the fire pit and stargazing with the telescope under the incredible dark skies. And we're looking forward to learning how to fish as a family and try out different water sports at the Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club. We have aimed at creating a warm and welcoming space at Cronkley Cottage, and we’re so excited to share it with others so you can create your own happy memories there too.

Magical stay

We had an absolutely magical Christmas spent at Cronkley. This place is beautiful and has everything you could possibly need. It is modern yet cosy with a lovely big log burning fire. The reservoir walks are literally on your doorstep and the views from this lovely cottage are plentiful. Thank you Emma for a lovely stay and being a great host!
