Hidden away by a private lake in the South Downs National Park is where you’ll find Ditchling Cabin. It’s a pitched roof place with a deck, jetty and boat that wouldn’t look out of place in the Canadian wilderness. But it’s eminently more reachable than that: easily accessible from London, it’s less than an hour’s drive from the M25 and just 20 minutes from Brighton. It has rustic charm in spades but has been carefully curated for comfort too. To that end, there are relaxed sofas, a log burner, an emperor double bed, a roll-top bath and a lakeside hot tub as well.
Although Ditchling Cabin is a beautifully romantic retreat for couples, it actually sleeps up to four, so works just as well for families (dogs are also welcome). It’s perfect for a switched-off, self-catering holiday where you can forget about the hubbub of urban life. That might mean hours spent reading on the deck, wild swimming in the lake or paddle-boarding across it. It might mean sinking into the warm waters of the hot tub or sitting in front of the fire. It certainly won’t mean watching TV. That’s deliberately absent here; instead, you have a radio, books and board games. In truth, WiFi is provided but there’s no compulsion to connect (or – whisper it – to tell the kids!).
The cabin is timber-clad both inside and out, and with its classically styled furniture, reclaimed and retro fixtures and fittings, and collection of vintage fishing paraphernalia and paintings, it feels like it’s been here as long as the lake. The downstairs kitchen, living room and dining space is open-plan with bi-folding doors providing a seamless link to the deck, lake and countryside beyond. There’s a cupboard bunk room cleverly tucked away off this space, while the main bedroom is on the first floor and offers elevated views from the enormous bed and roll-top bath.
Should you tire of simply admiring the Downs from your cabin hideaway, you can easily explore them too. It’s an uphill hike to the top of this chalky ridge but well worth it for the outstanding views. If you’ve got the legs for a couple more miles, carry on to the fabled heights of Ditchling Beacon. From there you can spy Brighton Beach in one direction and Ditchling village surrounded by countryside in the other. Look really carefully and you might spot the roof of The Bull pub in the village. It’s the obvious choice for lunch or dinner, although there's also the inviting water and cosy confines of Ditchling Cabin tempting you back to your lakeside idyll.
