The Grand is a Brighton icon. Its 10-storey, wedding-cake-white facade has graced the seafront since 1864 and its past guests have included screen stars and politicians including John F Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher – who almost met a grisly end here when the building was bombed in 1984. The rooms are rather conservative, and the overall feel old-fashioned, but the place has bags of atmosphere. Afternoon tea is a must.

Perfect
Afternoon Tea
Great traditional Hotel. Went for afternoon tea while staying in Brighton and it was superb. Good service, discreet but attentive, perfect tea with scones. Quiet and very comfortable
