The Tennis Shed may sound like somewhere to store your racket and balls but let us assure you that this contemporary East Sussex cabin is much, much more than that. Set in an orchard surrounded by wildflowers in the summer, The Tennis Shed is spacious and extremely well-equipped, with access to more plush facilities than any cabin you’re likely to have seen before. We don’t just mean WiFi, a Smart TV and a modern kitchen – though it has all of those things. We’re talking about a sauna, a gym, a swimming pool – and, naturally, a tennis court!
While the word ‘cabin’ conjures up images of a humble rustic retreat, in truth The Tennis Shed is the highest of high-end holiday homes, with two bedrooms and everything you could want from a self-contained hideaway, plus idyllic surrounding gardens. And the location is terrific – on the edge of picturesque Ditchling village and the fringes of the South Downs National Park. You could truly holiday here for a whole week without running out of things to do.
Inspired by a Swedish aesthetic, the cabin is clad in burnt black larch, with a striking red front door. It looks in one direction towards the tennis court it’s named for, and in the other the countryside and hills. Inside, everything is neatly arranged on one level and every room has its own door to the outside deck. Both bedrooms are doubles but one can be split into a twin – and there’s space for a put-up bed or cot too. The living space is open plan, with a well-equipped modern kitchen, a dining table and an inviting corner sofa angled around a log burner. Cushions, throws and the glow from the fire offer a cosy, hygge feel – embrace it and head for the sauna for more Scandinavian vibes. You'll find it, along with the heated pool and gym, in a separate building a wander away through the four-acre terraced garden that separates the property from the owner’s home.
If you have time for a longer stroll, you can walk into Ditchling where there’s a great pub and a good museum too. There’s a vineyard with a well-regarded restaurant less than two miles up the road, and you're just outside the South Downs National Park. The area is great for walking, cycling and horse riding, with buzzy, beachy Brighton, a few miles away on the other side.
