The Crab and Lobster
UK England South East England West Sussex Chichester
01243 641 233 Mill Lane, Sidlesham, West Sussex PO20 7NB
- 4 Guest Rooms
- Boutique Country Pub
Really special places to stay are few and far between on the Manhood Peninsula, south of Chichester, but the lovely Crab and Lobster is one of them. This pretty, seventeenth-century pub is tucked away on the quieter, eastern side of the peninsula, and backs onto the banks of peaceful Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve, an intertidal bay that fills and empties with each tide; you can join the 1.5-mile circular Sidlesham Nature Trail, which skirts part of the bay, at Sidlesham Quay, just up the lane from the pub. Part of the fun of staying for a night or two is having the opportunity to see the bay's extraordinary transformation, as high tide brings the sea slapping up against the Quay, before ebbing away to reveal an entirely different landscape of mudflats and saltmarsh stretching off into the distance. Downstairs at the pub there’s a comfy flagstoned bar and excellent restaurant – look out for local Selsey crab on the menu – and upstairs four tranquil, luxurious rooms, decked out in cocooning pastel shades, with fresh flowers and REN toiletries. An extra £20 gets you one of the deluxe rooms at the back of the pub, which overlook the nature reserve and come kitted out with binoculars.
