Twee Gebroeders Barge
Literally ‘Two Brothers’ in English, this 64-foot fully restored Dutch Sailing Barge or 'Skutsje', moored in a brilliant location on the river in Woodbridge, Suffolk, is is a unique place to stay in one of Suffolk's most alluring riverside towns. It's a big, heavy old thing, so those averse to boats needn't worry - you wouldn't even know you were on the water. And they've done a fantastic job of restoring it as a holiday let, with all the amenities you expect in a regular holiday cottage and space for up to 4 people in water-borne comfort. A stay on Twee Gebroeders has also got to be one of the most eco-friendly holidays going – just a 2-minute walk from Woodbridge's busy train station so you don't even need to bring the car!
Restored just over a decade ago, it's a beautiful thing, and stepping aboard you feel you could set sail immediately. However, you're not heading out onto the high seas (the barge no longer goes anywhere), and you won't be roughing it either. The main saloon, where you'll spend most of your time, has an L-shaped seating area, a folding table and a thoroughly up-to-date galley with granite worktops and a fridge-freezer, and a fabulous cast-iron oil-fired range, which supplies heating, hot water and cooking facilities. There's also a flatscreen TV, a DVD player and lots of DVDs, CDs, books and board games, and decent wifi too. What's more, they accept up to 3 dogs on board, so you can take the whole family.
The main cabin has a fitted double bed with a comfy memory foam mattress, a wall-mounted TV and DVD player and four opening portholes, while there's also a twin cabin which can sleep two adults or children in two full sized single bunks, again with high-quality memory foam mattresses .There's also a really good shower room, appropriately decorated with lovely Avocet-design Delft tiles, and a full-height shower, plus a proper loo – rare on vessels of this size, they tell us!
What about the location? Well, you couldn't really be in a better part of Woodbridge, on the gentle river Deben and the atmospheric town quay, surrounded by other craft of all shapes and size. There's plenty to do nearby – visits to the iconic Tide Mill, lovely walks along the river in both directions – and you're also just five minutes' walk from the town centre, where there are pubs and restaurants and indie shops galore: Woodbridge is the sort of place that always features in Sunday supplements as a terrific place to live. It's also a great spot for exploring further afield in Suffolk. The ancient Viking site of Sutton Hoo is just outside the town (right by, incidentally, a superb gastropub in the Unruly Pig), and you're just a short drive from the delights of Rendlesham Forest, Orford and even Snape and Aldeburgh, where you'll find Twee Gebroeders' big sister, the Onderneming.
