Just a few miles south of the cathedral city of Ely, in the heart of Cambridgeshire, these four spacious self-catering cottages are a perfect spot from which to explore the watery landscape of the Fens. Situated in a glorious riverside spot on a small 12-acre farm,  these properties feel genuinely remote yet are only an hour or so from London, and literally minutes from Ely and Cambridge. They're an eco-friendly choice too, powered and heated by a mixture of ground- and air-source heat pumps and solar panels, and extremely comfortable to boot!

There are four cottages to choose from, all of them purpose-built and kitted out to a high standard with contemporary fixtures and fittings. The largest – Willow – comfortably accommodates eight people in four spacious bedrooms (two are en-suite) that are furnished with super-king-size beds; it has a lovely open-plan living area and high-end kitchen, underfloor heating throughout, a wood-burner and cinema room among lots of other state-of-the-art facilities. Oak Cottage is smaller, sleeping four, but enjoys the same open-plan living space and environmentally friendly facilities, as do both Chestnut and Elm cottages, which each sleep two people, making Gravel Farm a great spot for couples as well as families. Each cottage also has its own garden and is thoroughly dog-friendly.

Finally, the friendly team here are excellent hosts, eager to share the delights of an area you may not be familiar with, but where there's literally loads to discover, from obvious treats like a trip into Ely to see the town's magnificent Gothic cathedral to the National Trust's oldest nature reserve at Wicken Fen. You can also be in Cambridge or Newmarket in 20 minutes, or head further east to explore the many and varied delights of Suffolk. However, given such a glorious location, you may not want to leave at all – there are numerous riverside walks you can do from your doorstep, great birdwatching opportunities up and down the Great Ouse, and a mixture of country lanes and dedicated cycle routes for rural rides. With Wicken Fen just two minutes away, there really is no better or more comfortable base for exploring the unique landscape of the Fens and mixing in a bit of urban culture at the same time.
