Luxury cabins with a western theme in a fabulously rural Norfolk location

Hank and Sarah had a dream. They wanted to go and live in the country, the more rural the better, and set up their own glamping or camping site. Unlike most dreamers, though, they actually went ahead and did it, and the result is Hank's Ranch. An adults-only 3.5 acre site where couples can rest easy in their own cosy luxury cabin. It's a truly alluring spot, deep in the heart of rural Norfolk – easy to reach yet very hard to leave.

As you may guess from the name, Hank and Sarah have put an extra spin on their super-comfortable luxury cabins by giving them a Wild West theme, inspired by their own travels in the United States. You can choose from The General Store, The Jail or The Church, each of which has the authentic look of the Wild West about it – made completely out of wood, with wide verandahs with rocking chairs and any amount of cowboy paraphernalia inside. It's an effective and fun concept, and it really works. But the main point is that these cabins – built from scratch by Hank himself using local materials – are seriously comfortable, with electricity, central heating, powerful hot showers and flushing toilets and toiletries, and kitchenettes equipped with oven and hob, fridge, crockery and utensils. The only thing they don't have – deliberately so – is WiFI, or a TV, just a small DAB radio to keep in touch with the outside world – plus your phone of course, which gets a decent signal and can be charged in your cabin. Behind the cabins, there is a covered patio with an outdoor bath, a small orchard and a covered outdoor kitchen with a gas BBQ and a dining table and chairs.

Even without all these amenities, each cabin is a very comfortable proposition – highly insulated and warm and toasty at any time of year. Each one has also been thoughtfully and sometimes playfully laid out and furnished, with king-size beds with super-comfy mattresses, plenty of space to sit down and ingenious and inventive fixtures and fittings made with all manner of bits and pieces that Hank and Sarah have picked up over the years. A jam pan doubles as a kitchen sink, antique stained glass adorns the Church – the most spacious cabin of the three – where there's also a small 'altar', made (like most of work surfaces) from local ash; the iron bars in the The Jail were made by a local craftsman.Whichever cabin you choose, you really couldn't be more cosy, and on summer evenings there is nothing like sitting on the verandah watching the sun set with a glass of wine in hand, looking out over Hank's wildflower meadow.

Up to two dogs per cabin are welcome, and Sarah and Hank live next door and are usually around – stetson in hand – to greet you and help you get settled. They'll give you a starter pack of firewood for your fire pit, together with a welcome pack of local goodies, and the are usually on hand for hints on where to go and what to see, local walks and suchlike – for example directions to the local pub across the fields, or to nearby Oxborough, where there's another good pub and a moated medieval manor house, Oxburgh Hall. Thetford Forest is also nearby, with multiple walks, cycle paths and other outdoor attractions.
