Situated on the sumptuous Gitcombe estate in south Devon, just outside the South Hams village of Cornworthy, the Gitcombe Retreat is the modern alternative to the slightly larger Georgian manor house at the heart of the estate – a contemporary oak-framed dwelling built recently by award-winning architects that enjoys sensational views across the south Devon countryside. Sleeping up to 8 people in superb comfort, the property is the ultimate in modern luxury, with light, generously proportioned rooms and beautifully designed bathrooms, underfloor heating throughout, and a nod to accessibility with extra-wide doorways and a ground-floor double bedroom with en-suite bathroom.
The house enjoys all the benefits of the estate, including two swimming pools, a sauna and steam room, tennis courts and a children's playground and indoor games room. But it's a very special place to stay in its own right, with a beautiful oak-beamed open-plan living space surrounded by glass that makes the most of the house's bucolic location. There's a wood-burner to keep things cosy, a flatscreen Smart TV and a Sonos sound system. The dining table seats up to 10 adults and and you can open up the doors to really let the outside in or drift between the living room and wraparound verandah. As well as the ground-floor bedroom, there are three guest rooms on the lower ground floor, each with en-suite bath or shower rooms. The house also has its own hot tub!
You could spend a great deal of time at the Gitcombe Retreat just lazing about the house and imagining it's yours, admiring the views and taking a dip in the pool or just exploring all the other facilities on the estate. But it's worth knowing that you are also in a particularly lovely part of the South Hams, just a few minutes' inland from Dartmouth and Blackpool Sands; Dartmoor and the busy market town of Totnes are also close by, as are the resorts of Salcombe, Bigbury and the beaches at Hope Cove and Thurlestone. It would be hard to think of a much better or more stylish place for a Devon family holiday.
