Characterful 17th-century hotel on Dartmouth’s quayside, with river views and South West food, in one of Devon’s prettiest harbour towns
There can’t be many better places to wake up in Dartmouth than right on the historic quayside, with the river flowing past your window and boats bobbing in the harbour below. The Royal Castle has been part of the town for centuries, and following a refurbishment by St Austell Brewery, the characterful property welcomes guests from far and wide. With a five-storey frontage, traditional pub, and 24 individually decorated en-suite bedrooms above, it’s an institution – and a very handy base for exploring South Devon and beyond.
Although the interiors have been given a contemporary refresh, there’s still plenty of old-world charm: the bar is cosy, with flagstone floors, low beams and a welcoming pub atmosphere, while upstairs, The Sloop restaurant makes the most of the Royal Castle’s position overlooking the water.
Accommodation-wise, choose from 'Cosy Double', 'Standard', 'Signature' and 'Premium View' bedrooms. Some can be configured as twins, others are dog-friendly. If you're holidaying with children, the 'Family' option has a sofa bed suitable for up to two kids 12 and under. There’s a stylish yet homely feel to all, with splashes of colour here and there and artwork adorning the walls, alongside all the modern essentials you’d expect.
Food is another good reason to book a stay. The Sloop focuses on South West produce and seasonal cooking, alongside well-executed pub classics, with the menu changing to make the most of what’s available locally. Seafood is naturally a highlight, while traditional Sunday roasts and hearty dishes are just the ticket after a day visiting the coast. You can also enjoy a good selection of St Austell ales to wash it all down with.
And then there’s Dartmouth itself. The Royal Castle is brilliantly positioned for getting out and about, with the town's cobbled streets, independent shops, galleries and ancient quayside a stone's throw away. Take the ferry across the River Dart to the village of Kingswear, or, for a dose of history, Dartmouth Castle stands at the mouth of the estuary. Meanwhile, the South Hams countryside, South West Coast Path and nearby beaches offer plenty of opportunities for walking and swimming, from the valley trail to Blackpool Sands.
