A beautiful, contemporary B&B with unique and comfortable rooms – and a great breakfast!

Paul Vater and Paul Barratt swapped their lives in trendy north London a couple of years ago to settle down in Aylsham, Norfolk, buying this very stylish three-storey house and workshop, which was indeed originally the local tinsmith's, and making it into a beautiful and highly desirable boutique B&B. Our guess is it will be pretty much unlike anywhere else you will have stayed, particularly in what is largely an undiscovered part of north Norfolk. There are just two rooms, simply furnished, bright, spacious and contemporary, which like the rest of the house provide ample display space for the couple's collection of modern and contemporary art. Breakfast is taken in a rather retro-style sun-room that overlooks the garden and you can hang out as much or as little as you like in the downstairs living room, which is stuffed with books on interesting subjects and yet more art and intriguing objects. One of the rooms has an en-suite bathroom and digital radio and CD player, while the other has a DVD player and TV and its own bathroom across the hall. There's also free wifi throughout, and breakfast is fab – and fastidiously locally sourced. One other thing: you will be sharing the house (though not your bedroom) with Dusty and Cleo – two gorgeous Labradoodles who manage to make the place feel even more like home (though of course it means you can't bring your own pooch). All in all a beautiful place to stay, and bang in the centre of Aylsham.

Open all year.

Double rooms with breakfast £110–£125 a night.

The Owner Says

Tinsmith’s House is a tranquil and comfortable base from where you can easily reach the wonderful waterways of the Norfolk Broads as well as the unspoilt beaches along the east coast. There are countless country walks, grand houses, gardens and attractions like Cromer, Sheringham and Holt on Tinsmith’s doorstep. The salt marshes and villages of the North Norfolk coast such as Cley, Blakeney and Stiffkey are within a 20-25 minute drive as is the fine city of Norwich - trully a perfect place to enjoy a Norfolk break.

Getting There

FROM NORWICH (20 minutes by car)

Follow the A140 to Aylsham and Cromer. Just past the town sign for Aylsham you will come to a traffic island, go straight ahead and continue towards the town centre, passing the Bure Valley Railway on your right, Tesco on your left – cross a mini island, and on past a Budgens supermarket. Take the next road right – this is Burgh Road and  entrance for a free car park. Tinsmith’s House is the cream coloured wooden building you will see opposite the bottom of this car park on Oakfield Road.

FROM KINGS LYNN (1 hour by car)

Take the A149 out of Kings Lynn  towards Cromer and Fakenham. As you pass through Creake towards Thursford, turn right onto the B1354 road to Briston and Melton Constable. Then on to Saxthorpe and Corpusty. Ignore the sign to Aylsham  and drive straight on towards Blickling Hall. On entering the Market Place follow the road down the right-hand side of the square and take the second road on the left. This is Burgh Road – follow signs for the free car park. Tinsmith’s House is the cream coloured wooden building you will see opposite the bottom of this car park on Oakfield Road.
