The Broads National Park is a magical place, but we've often thought it could with some better quality ontemporary accommodation. Many visitors spend their time on boatsand perhaps as a result the offerings for landlubbers can sometimes seem a bit thin. Luckily, local pub group Colchester Inns has ridden to the rescue in the Northern Broads and North Norfolk, where its original Recruiting Sergeant business has long had a reputation for excellent food and comfortable rooms, and they've recently taken over the Lodge at Salhouse to bring their portfolio to five pubs – all of which do everything a decent country inn should do: really excellent food and drink, a warm welcome and a selection of cosy rooms to collapse into after a good dinner.
The Lodge at Salhouse is their latest location, situated just off the main road between Wroxham - the capital of the Broads - and sleepy Salhouse, and well placed for all the most important delights of the northern Broads. It's within easy distance of Salhouse Broad, where you can hire a canoe or just loaf about by the water, and there are several circular walks you can do from its doorstep. It' also a short drive from most of the national park's key locations, including Wroxham, which is a five-minute drive away. You're also only about 20 minutes outside Norwich city centre, which can also be easily reached by train from nearby Salhouse station, making The Lodge a decent base for the city too.
The pub itself occupies a handsome early Victorian vicarage with a spacious bar and restaurant downstairs, an expansive outside terrace and six very comfortable guest rooms on the upper floor. They all come with tea and coffee-making facilities, Smart TVs, super-fast Wi-Fi and good-sized bathrooms with complimentary toiletries. They are also extremely dog-friendly so all the family can come! There's plenty of parking and their extremely reasonable rates include one of the best breakfasts you'll get for miles around,. Indeed the food they serve in the restaurant is top-notch: high-quality pub classics, including excellent steaks and plenty of well-presented crowd-pleasing dishes, plus a handful of more refined options, enjoyed in an elegantly contemporary restaurant that looks over the gardens and outside terrace – a popular spot on warm summer evenings. Highly recommended.
