Amazing treehouses, shepherds lodges, and a vintage Airstream, for stunning family and couples' holidays in South Devon

You think you know what a treehouse is – and then you clap eyes on the stunning accommodation at Dittisham Hideaway and do a double-take. This is real 'Grand Designs' territory, definitely not the sort of thing your Dad might have knocked up in the garden (unless your Dad is Kevin McCloud). We're talking wooden roundhouses in the sky – hugely spacious lodgings with their own private, wraparound deck which has more space than your average back garden. There are hammocks, seating, outdoor games (including table football), a barbecue area, and a wood-fired cedar hot tub – heck, you could run Olympic marathons up here. Indeed, you're invited to think of each treehouse (there are four) as your own private resort, and it's really not wide of the mark. Inside, there's a king-sized double and a separate children's bunk room sleeping up to three little ones, two en-suite bathrooms, a serious kitchen, a wood burner and underfloor heating, and everything else from Nespresso machine to smart TV. Testament to what they've created is winning bronze for 'Glamping Business of the Year' at the 2023/24 Devon Tourism Awards.

They really are extraordinary spaces, and make for a stunning family holiday in a sunny, wooded valley just outside the lovely village of Dittisham. Couples, despair not, the Hideaway folks have you covered too, though you'll be on terra firma. Five bespoke 26-foot-long shepherds lodges in an old wildflower meadow look down the wooded valley, and while these are slightly more compact than the treehouses, they're very cleverly designed and no less charming. You get a full-size bed (Willow and Maple), a bathroom with a power shower, a kitchen area and a wood-burning stove, while outside there's a private terrace with loungers, hammocks, a dining table, fire pit and wood-fired hot tub. Two of the lodges (Cedar and Oak) also have a double sofa bed, meaning they sleep up to two adults and one child (or two smaller kids). And dog-friendly Beech has an adjacent 'mini-lodge' with bunk beds – in total, it sleeps two adults and up to four children (under 16 years). Or for a bit of vintage glam, the Hideaway reveals its final surprise in the shape of an authentic 1956 American Airstream caravan – all shiny chrome, walnut-finish cabinets, and orange leather seats, together with all the mod cons and plenty more outdoor space. Two people can spend a very cosy time here, happily going nowhere in a genuine 'King of the Road'.

Away from the Hideaway, this gorgeous part of Devon awaits. It's a mile to the local pub and village shop, and 10 minutes in the car to the lovely old port of Dartmouth. Riverside cafes, beaches, old smugglers' pubs, coastal walks, seafood restaurants, historic houses and defensive forts – this really is the kind of location that will have you coming back year after year, to your own private resort, high in the sky or down among the butterflies and wildflowers of South Devon.

Facilities

We offer guests their own private hot tub/spa bath – if you'd like to take a dip, use the bag of complimentary logs to stoke the wood-fired burners – be sure not to stir, because it will take longer to heat, and keep the lid on. As these do not run on electricity, they need a little attention to get hot.

Nearby

A short stroll around the hideaway is first our recommendation. Following the 15-minute circular trail around the Hideaway, you'll walk past our Treehouses, Vintage Airstream and Shepherds Lodges. Along with way, you'll come across our Wall of Art painted by local artist Mark Bell, who's cleverly put together ‘Dancing to the sounds of Nature’. At the top of the Hideaway are our apple trees and vegetable garden, a Boules pitch, and the best view in the house, with a bench to sit on overlooking the River Dart and beyond, towards Paignton.

You can also make use of the complimentary ferry voucher we provide. Drive down to Ham Car Park, just past the church in Dittisham, walk along the river's edge (tidal permitting) towards the Ferry Boat Inn and you'll see a pontoon and a handbell – give it a ring and Dave will pop along on his little wooden passenger boat, collect you, and take you across the River Dart to Greenway – there, you can grab and ice cream and watch the world go by on the water or take the short walk up to Greenway House, the former holiday home of famous crime writer Agatha Christie, for a nose around the National Trust treasure.

Elsewhere, pop into Fast Rabbit Gardens – set in 43 acres, it's like a secret garden, with seasonal plants and flowers around every corner and plenty of benches to take in the gorgeous colours all year round.

Or, head to Dartmouth, the historical Naval Town, and take a stroll around the local area – an easy circular walk takes you past some of the town's top spots. You can visit Dartmouth Castle, too – open daily in season and at the weekend off-peak.

Food & Drink

Our top suggestion is the Ferry Boat Inn, or the FBI as us locals call it. We recommend you take the short five-minute drive into Dittisham, park at the Level and walk down. They offer great service, stunning River Dart views, wonderful food and local drinks. After your meal, head back to Dittisham Hideaway, where you won't be disappointed with your bed – dressed with the very best Egyptian cotton linen, and locally sourced 100% British wool duvets from Devon Duvet, you're bound to have a great rest.

For breakfast, why not take a seat outdoors on your private terrace (grab a blanket if it's a little chilly)? What a way to start the day! Or, if you don’t fancy cooking, jump in the car to Dartmouth. Park alongside the river or head to one of the many car parks. Riverside, you'll come across The Embankment (formerly the GWR ticket office), offering outstanding estuary views in a truly classic bistro restaurant, where Elly Wentworth is at the helm of the kitchen. They serve lunch and dinner, too. Another option? Grab Fish and chips from Rockfish – they really can't be beaten. Freshly caught, and with one of the best views around, just watch out for our flying rubbish bins – the seagulls!

For lunch, we suggest a short drive up to Gardentime, our local garden centre, for a relaxed laid-back snack – paninis, salads and pies. The shop also offers great items to purchase, including many local goods.

If you'd like a BBQ back at Dittisham, pop into one of the local supermarkets or head to Eversfield farm shop in Totnes, where you can find great local produce. Don’t forget to grab some charcoal! Use the BBQ on your terrace, rustle up your dinner, and dine al fresco, or perhaps indoors in the comfort of your accommodation.

Fantastic stay

We stayed at Dittisham Hideaway’s American Airstream for the weekend with our dogs and we had a fantastic time. It comes with a separate plot of land so the area is nicely secluded and the patio comes with a BBQ, table football, chess, sun loungers… and the Airstream itself is very stylish and it is way more spacious than you’d think! They really thought of all the little details and the hamper came with quality items like fresh bread, muesli, crisps, milk, and more; and for the pups some bowls, a tennis ball, treats and a dog bed. A fantastic stay, thank you so much for having us.

Amazing little hideaway

What a truly amazing place - quiet and peaceful and everything you could possibly need. We stayed in the beautiful Beech Shepherd’s hut with 2 adults, 2 teenagers and a dog and everything you could need for a 3 night break. Beautiful countryside and the girls loved the hot tub. Thoroughly recommend this place to anybody wanting a peaceful break away.
