Amelie and Friends

31 North Street Chichester West Sussex PO19 1LY

As soon as you step through the threshold of this relaxed café-restaurant you know you’re in for a treat. The stylish entrance sets the tone, with a huge subway-tiled counter piled high with goodies baked on-site, and wood-framed chalkboards advertising the day’s risotto, quiche, soup and so on. Beyond is a striking, pared-down dining room, all wood and white, with statement lighting and Eames Eiffel chairs, and out the back there’s a small conservatory and a lovely walled courtyard garden that’s one of the nicest places to eat alfresco in the city. Amelie and Friends is open throughout the day, informal enough just to pop in for a coffee and pastry, but also offering some really great cooking on the fortnightly-changing all-day menu – the likes of spiced crispy pork belly sandwich in focaccia, or confit duck leg with rhubarb and bok choi. The kitchen opens earlier on Saturdays and Sundays for weekend brunch.
