Lancashire
Lancashire, just below Cumbria up in the North West of England, was once at the heart of Britain's Industrial Revolution, its early factories at the forefront of technological advance and its cotton products exported around the world. Cities like Preston still bear the mark of Victorian endeavour and prowess, while the university city of Lancaster has a longer pedigree and the most to see. The famous beachside resort of Blackpool is the single biggest attraction in the area, with legions of holidaymakers descending on the resort in the summer – it's unmissable, despite what you may have heard – and there's plenty to do here at any time of year and also a host of great places to stay and eat. Accommodation is at the budget end of the scale by and large, from family run guesthouses to traditional B&Bs, but there are plenty of large hotels and an increasing number of resort-style places and boutique B&Bs too. Morecambe is Blackpool's little brother, with a vintage seafront and the odd hidden gem, while out in the Lancashire countryside are cosy pubs and inns with rooms, many doing amazing things with the excellent local produce, from seafood to vegetables.
