Folks in Lancashire know all about the charms of the Ribble Valley – beautifully scenic walking country with a foodie emphasis – but it flies under the radar of a lot of people. Well, listen to the Lancs, because it's an ace place for a country weekend away or a walking holiday, and somewhere like the Waddington Arms sums up all that's special about it.
You've got your lovely little picture-postcard village – ancient bridge, babbling river and all – and a old coaching inn that's right at the heart of the community. It's seen a few changes over the years, but the current incarnation is a handsome renovation that's heavy on country comfort – think a modern huntin', fishin', shootin' vibe inside and a sunny terrace and beer garden that's more lounge-bar than pub trestles.
Six, smallish en-suite rooms provide a light, contemporary cottage backdrop for a relaxed night's sleep. They are a mix of doubles and twins with differing outlooks, depending on the side of the building. They are all accessed by stairs, and are really aimed at couples looking to get out and about, because they're pretty cosy. But you're not here for the weekend to hang out in your room – instead, there are wonderful walks right from the door through rolling fields and woodlands, or up on to the fells on the trail of the Lancashire witches. Even the nearest market town, Clitheroe, is just a short walk away, and the pub can help you with other suggestions and directions.
And when you get back, you have the terrific bistro food at the Waddington to sustain you – pub classics and a few fancier dishes, all making great use of locally sourced produce and ingredients. Food is a big deal in this part of northwestern England – Michelin stars abound – so there's no slacking at country pubs like this. In fact, the tone is set at breakfast, where an excellent Full English, or things like kippers, or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, make sure you're set for a day of country pursuits in one of England's more secret corners.
