Perfectly perched on the North Cornwall coastal path, with stunning walks in either direction, The Bedruthan Hotel couldn’t be in a better location to keep parents, kids (and the dog) all suitably occupied, and with its sister hotel - The Scarlet - firmly adults-only, it unashamedly caters to the family market. Don’t be put off if you’re looking for a couples retreat (though perhaps avoid peak holidays) – there are tranquil zones, spa facilities and dining areas just for grown-ups, not to mention the vast sandy cove and coast path where you can guarantee some peace and quiet. However, for those with kids in tow this place really does pull the bells and whistles out.

The interior suggests a 1960s vibe, with many quiet corners; local art bedecks the corridors, and rooms are comfy and contemporary, many with sea views. There is a broad spectrum of activities for children in the school holidays, with family crafts sessions and scavenger hunts in the grounds of the hotel. For tiny tots there’s indoor soft play, ride on toys and an adventure playground, plus free children clubs so fraught parents get time out for some pampering in the spa and pool. Older kids have their own room kitted out with Wii and beanbags, as well as free surf lessons and film club.

Embrace the elements in the outdoor Sensory Spa Garden before a champagne cream tea on the terrace or pack a picnic to take on a walk to Bedruthan Steps. Stroll down the lane to the beach, just five minutes walk away, to play in the rockpools, or take to the waves and book yourself in for a surf lesson. Your four-legged friend will love Mawgan Porth, where dogs are allowed on the beach all year round.

The Wild Café is perfect for families and everyday food and lunches, while The Herring is a more sophisticated seafood restaurant, serving higher-end, grown-up fare that earned it the title of Cornwall’s ‘restaurant of the year’ a few years ago.
