Bedruthan Hotel & Spa

UK England South West England Cornwall Newquay

A great family hotel near Newquay, but don’t overlook it if you want a couples’ retreat.

Since teaming up with the chefs from Porthminster Café (of St Ives fame) and opening two cracking new restaurants (which we’ll come to in a minute), the Bedruthan Steps Hotel has become as much as a foodie destination as a place to stay. But even before its recent revamp, the Bedruthan had topped the family hotel’s league for years. Don’t be put off if you’re looking for a couples retreat (though perhaps avoid peak holidays) – there are tranquil zones, spa facilities and dining areas just for grown-ups, not to mention the vast sandy cove and coast path where you can guarantee some peace and quiet. However, for those with kids in tow this place really does pull the bells and whistles out. For tiny tots there’s indoor soft play, ride on toys and an adventure playground, plus free childcare so fraught parents get time out for some pampering in the spa and pool. Older kids have their own room kitted out with Wii and beanbags, as well as free surf lessons and film club. During school holidays there’s entertainment across the board from crafts and cookery to DJ workshops. Rooms are comfy and contemporary, many with sea views, but it’s the aforementioned foodie offerings that warrant more waxing lyrical about. There are two restaurants, one of which – the Wild Café – is perfect for families and everyday food and lunches, while the other – The Herring – is a more sophisticated seafood restaurant, serving higher-end, more grown-up fare that earned it the title of Cornwall’s ’restaurant of the year’ in 2014.
