Situated in a beautiful and very popular part of North Cornwall, just outside Wadebridge and a hop, skip and a jump across the estuary from trendy Padstow, Penpont Farm has been in the Hawkey family for three generations, and remains at heart a 550-acre mixed working farm. It's a beautiful spot, comprising pasture, wetland areas and woodland that supports a diverse array of bird life, foxes, badgers and other wildlife, and we're lucky that back in the 1970s the family decided to open it up to the rest of us, converting a series of stone and slate barns into self-catering holiday cottages.

They have gone from strength to strength since then, renovated further farm buildings and building new cottages in the surrounding fields to create 'The Olde House' – basically a classy collection of beautiful self-contained cottages that provide a gorgeous base from which to enjoy this beautiful part of Cornwall.

There are 32 cottages within the farm's boundaries, ranging in size from one bedroom to five bedrooms and each accommodating anything from two to ten people. All are tastefully furnished either in a bright contemporary or more traditional cottage style, with well-equipped kitchens and modern bathrooms. They're all four-star-rated except for the five-star Manor House and Barn, and the five-star gold Ridgeway Park, and there's always a Cornish cream tea waiting for you on arrival.

Over the years the family have also added an indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room and hot tub, a games room with snooker table, an outdoor play area, tennis courts and a farm trail, so even if the sun doesn't shine, there is always something to do. Not only that, they are environmentally friendly too, powering the properties and pool with a series of solar panels, a biomass boiler and energy storage units, and making the effort with other small touches, like using eco-friendly cleaning products and LED lighting, recycled refuse bags and toilet rolls – there's even a charging point for electric cars.

An on-site shop has things you can borrow – beach stuff, games, wellies, etc – as well as buy – toilet rolls, firelighters and other essentials – so you don't technically need to go anywhere while you're here. But that would be a pity, since for starters there are some great beaches nearby, not least Daymer Bay, Trebarwith Strand and the beach at Rock, just across the Camel estuary from Padstow. There is also the nearby town of Wadebridge, and the wonderful 17-mile-long Camel Trail, which you can follow on foot or by bike all the way to Bodmin Moor. You would also be crazy to visit this part of the coast and not see Rock or Padstow, two towns popularized by John Betjeman and Rick Stein respectively.

Suitable For

Our favourite room has to be our new steam room.  We've had a swimming pool at The Olde House since 1985, but in 2017 we built a new swimming pool complex, featuring a Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room.  It's pure luxury in the steam room, leave the kids with your partner or parents, then close the door to the noise and relax within the soothing steam!

Nearby

We are positioned perfectly to explore our beautiful county, with the pretty villages of Padstow, Port Isaac and Polzeath all within 8 miles.  What we love most about our locality is our stunning farmland and that it's just a short car journey to some wonderful beaches.  It's no wonder so many people love holidaying here, we are so fortunate to call it our home.

The Owner Says

Our family have been living on our farmland for over 100 years.  We love it here and want to share the experience of our Cornish life with visiting families.  Back in the seventies, we first started converting the old farmyard barns into cosy self catering cottages.   Over the years we have welcomed thousands of families to stay with us on the farm, many of which return year after year and some who have become firm friends.

Our aim is to give our guests the best holiday, staying in comfortable, well equipped cottages, providing a range of facilities and activities to fill the days and sharing our favourite places to visit whilst out and about.

Getting There

From Exeter, take the A30 via Okehampton and Launceston. Just after Launceston fork left and take A395 towards Camelford; when it joins the A39, fork left and follow the A39 through Camelford towards Wadebridge. About a mile after passing the St Kew Highway Filling Station, look for a sign pointing to Chapel Amble. Take this right turn. At the next T-junction turn right and, a mile further along this road, The Olde House is on your left, just before the small bridge at the edge of the village. Call at Reception in the main farmhouse and they will help you find your cottage.
