Just outside the Cornish village of Rock, Treverra Cottage offers the perfect tranquil bolthole for a family or group. It’s set in a couple of acres of beautifully landscaped gardens and surrounded by farmers’ fields, with stunning sea views and a beach within walking distance. It also has old-world charm and modern comforts in equal measure. The result is a self-catering holiday home that balances tradition and style with fantastic facilities, including an infinity pool, Jacuzzi and tennis court.
These modern additions to a 19th-century cottage have all been introduced in a way that doesn't feel at odds with the place at all: the kitchen, contemporary bathrooms and the screens and speakers of modern life don’t detract from the overall look of whitewashed walls, beamed ceilings and seagrass-style matting. It's a look and feel that feels fitting for a cottage in Cornwall, albeit one with a hint of Scandi style. Antique furniture, artwork and fabrics add interest and warmth, while colours are sun-bleached and corners satisfyingly smooth – all giving a sense that everything was made nearby or washed up on these shores years ago. But interior design this pleasing doesn’t happen by accident – it’s been carefully curated to help you feel at ease and at home. Toys, books and games tucked away on shelves help with that, too.
Upstairs, there are three en-suite bedrooms: a king, a super-king and a twin, each one comfortably designed for two with a nod to the nautical here and there. Bedding is as dreamy as the design of the rooms, with goose down and Egyptian cotton. A further two guests can sleep in twin beds in a ground-floor room which doubles up as a place to watch TV. It’s perfect for kids, but if that doesn’t suit your set-up, there’s an option to hire a separate garden studio, at an additional cost.
Days out will no doubt be spent on the beach, the closest of which is Porthilly. A footpath leads there from the garden and takes about 15 minutes. From there, you can walk on to Rock, which sits on the sheltered waters of the Camel Estuary. The Mariner’s pub and Fee’s Foods are top places to visit, while paddleboarding, sailing and the five-minute passenger ferry to Padstow are popular things to do. For surf, head three miles up the coast to west-facing Polzeath – a 15-minute drive, and close but not too close to your tranquil holiday home.
