Beautifully refreshed 16th-century coaching inn with rooms, tucked into Boscastle’s harbour valley on the North Cornwall coast
Boscastle is one of those Cornish villages that seems to have been designed by a novelist: a narrow harbour nestled deep in a steep-sided valley, slate-roofed cottages, winding streets, and the Atlantic crashing just beyond the headland. Right in the middle of it all sits The Wellington, a handsome 16th-century coaching inn that's been welcoming guests for centuries, from weary travellers to King Edward VII and Thomas Hardy.
As part of the St Austell Brewery collection, the pub was lovingly refurbished. Original stone walls, stained-glass panelling, exposed wooden beams and open fires retain character, while the renovation added stylish décor and modern touches to the 14 en-suite bedrooms. Thoughtfully designed, choose from 'Cosy Double', 'Standard Double', 'Standard Twin', and 'Premium Double'. They all come with tea- and coffee-making facilities, an iron, a hairdryer, a TV and WiFi. Dogs are welcome in some rooms at a charge of £20 per stay, but with that you get a hamper complete with treats. If you're a foursome or a small family, why not book a ‘Mill Apartment’? They sleep between three and six across various configurations, and are all dog-friendly. Whichever category you go for, be sure to use the provided swim robes and beach bags if you head out for a harbour dip or to the nearby 'secret' tidal pool.
Affectionately known as ‘The Welly’, the bar serves St Austell's award-winning beers, and dining spaces are on the ground and first floors. You'll find a locals' snug, too. On warm days, enjoy a drink and meal on the terrace while savouring the scenic cliffside views. The food menu is all about local produce, featuring tasty plates such as pan-fried local catch; South West fish and chips; chicken, ham hock and Proper Job IPA pie; and grilled halloumi burger.
Location is where The Wellington really scores, too. The harbour is a five-minute stroll away – from there, join the South West Coast Path for fabulous walks towards Rocky Valley and Tintagel Castle, and Pentargon Waterfall in the other direction.
